could a planet be destroyed this way?

Could a particle beam-type weapon, given enough power and mounted on a spacecraft, reduce a planet the size of earth or larger to several massive peices? Obviously it would come back together under the force of gravity, but when those massive chunks of planet that are thousands of miles across come back together how would that affect the habitability of said planet as well? (I cant imagine id be favorable in the least if it were once habitable) any educated answers are welcomed as this is reasearch for a book. Thank you

Update:

Edit: haha.. no star wars death star rip offs here. I figured someone would mention that but no, itd be very far from that as were talking a kinetic based attack instead of a heat based one used by thebdeathstar, also, the planet would be shattered into maybe three or four massive pieces, so i prolly shouldve labeled this planet cracking moreso.

such a particle beam would very likely be focussed like a laser. In this event the worst that would happen is that a great hole would be drilled into the surface of the planet and through the crust and out the other side of the planet. In order to break a planet apart into pieces would require a powerful shock wave like an atomic blast, etc..

Only in Star Wars, I'm afraid. (Or would that be releived?)
