I've lost my word document (my dissertation) - please help me find it! Skydrive and download problems. :(?

Hello. I'm having a major stress so any answers would be helpful. Today, I downloaded a file from my skydrive onto my mum's computer to continue whilst at home. I spent a couple of hours editing it and then pressed 'save' NOT 'save as' before going to get a drink. When I came back up the computer had crashed but I assumed my work would be safe. It isn't. It has totally disappeared and I'm guessing it's because I was stupid and didn't choose 'save as' to make sure it had a safe home. I've searched the computer and my skydrive but I can't find it anywhere. Does anybody know where skydrive files goes when you just press 'save' or have any idea how I could go about recovering it? Thanks in advance.

Update:

Hi, I've tried saving another file downloaded from skydrive and it goes to my documents when I click save as but my diss has just totally disappeared. I've searched the entire computer including temporary files and the recycle bin but to no avail. Thank you for your help - guess I have a very busy day ahead tomorrow.

    Go back to the files location and do a Save As. Note where it is saving the file. Go to that location and look for a file saved around the time you saved it.

    It is a shame that you had to learn such a lesson with an extremely important document. You should save a doc like this in at least 3 locations- the computer, a thumb drive, and the cloud or server. And you should also save every 15 minutes or so. The more important the doc is, the more places it should be saved.

    I sincerely hope you find the file.

    I assume you have used the search facilities in Windows Explorer to try to find the file. If not search from the "Computer" folder point (on the Explorer "Tree" ) for a specific word which is in your thesis which is least likely to occur in other files. If the file exists that should find it though you may have a large list of possibilities to go through!

    Assuming you are using Word. On the version I use, if you try to use "save" with a file on which you have not previously done a "save as" , it will not let you! Instead it will put up the dialogue box as used for "save as" .

    So how you managed to lose it may be down to having pressed the "save" button on the dialogue box without changing the Word generated file name or specifying which folder it should be filed in.

    In the dialogue box Word normally suggests a name for the file which it derives from the document's first few words (e.g. the heading of a note you are writing ). In your case, maybe, the title of your thesis! As to the folder in which the file goes, the dialogue box shows you where it is going to file the document, for you to change the location as necessary. In my experience, it suggests you file it in the same place as the last document it was asked to file!

    Rambling but I hope this helps!

    p.s never use word without the automatic backup set to "on"

    As far as I know or from my experience it should be in My Documents if you never gave it a name and it seamed to save that's where it must be and seeing as it's a Word document it should look like a Word document (Word Icon)

    Cheers and Good Luck

    Is there a copy in your Downloads folder?

    If not, there may be one in your Temp folder, but I can't remember the filepath. Try here;
