How much of a chance do Australia have in this T20 WC?

Let's not dwell into the rankings. We all know how T20 rankings work and how Ireland are above Australia, don't we? Let me present you with some facts first.

The current rankings period started from August 10, 2010. During this time, Ireland have won eight of 11matches, but all of their victories have come against Associate nations: Kenya, Scotland, Canada, Netherlands and Afghanistan. The only matches they have played against full ICC members came during a three-match series against Bangladesh in July - and Ireland lost all three games.

6 of the 8 games Bangladesh played during that period were against the Associates. ( Their highest ranking was 4, if I am not wrong).

Australia haven't done any better though. They have only won 4 out of 13 matches played.

I had asked a question regarding Australia not being able to cope up with T20. Most of the answerers said it was because they don't take the game seriously. Agreed but even if that's so, there are players like Warner, Watson, Bailey, Husseys, Starc and other fast bowlers. Looks a deadly combination, doesn't it? So, do they have a chance in this WC?

Having said so, I know cricket is a game of uncertainties, especially T20.

BQ) Had Australia been a super power in T20s too, would our Australian mates here have agreed that T20 is indeed cricket and not just rubbish? I would like to know from the Aussie users with reason.

I agree that T20 Ranking is nothing but a joke. No way you can rank teams properly when there are very few T20's played in an year. Australia certainly better than Ireland. But overall it's known fact that they are not a very good T20 unit.

    This proves it.

Australia has a winning % of nearly 85% vs SL in tests. Sl has defeated Australia in just one test match!

But surprisingly it was the other way around in T20s. If my memory is correct, Sl have won 4 matches and Australia just 1. It clearly shows that in this format they are really below average.

I know they call the t20 cricket as the Hit and Giggle cricket. But if that is the case they should have been able to just dominate this format! Or at least stay among the top teams, exactly the way they dominated tests and ODIs.

Ok back to the world cup. Australia is a force to be recon with. No issue there. They would be a tough challenge to any of the top contenders who will be on their way to win the W.Cup. The chances of Australia winning this should be around 30%. We never know, anything goes in T20's.

    BQ) Hmmm? I think yes.

Australia has a chance just like all the teams do, but given the selectors can't even see that they have not selected a number of those who were the top or one of the top in both the batting and bowling department in the domestic t20 competition, I don't think they will do well.

As for your BQ, Australia was a finalist in the last world T20 and the vast majority if not all of the Australian members on here were still of the opinion it does not matter. You can only get one better than Australia did that time, so if the views don't change then, then they won't change.

White should not be there, it should be Travis Birt. Birt is not even in the squad to choose from according to what was in the paper yesterday, so if the selectors can't do the job they are paid to, then Australia won't have the team on paper to go far.

I'm an English fan and as we are T20 World Champs you might expect me to be all in favour of T20 cricket. I'm not. I quite enjoy it as a spectacle but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch a T20 international - if it's on TV and I've nothing better to do I'll watch it and only stay watching if it's a good match.

Australia's T20 problem is the same as the one they are facing in Test and ODI cricket and that is they are bringing through the next generation of players. The way cricket is going players need to be expert (especially batsmen) at playing three different sorts of innings. In Test cricket you need to be able to bat for several hours at a time, in ODI cricket the emphasis is on shorter innings but you need to score reasonably quickly - preferably at a steady tempo. T20 cricket is however the 100 metres of the sport - get a good start, accelerate quickly and then finish strong. Finding players with the right skill and who have international experience who can play all three types of innings and do it well enough to beat your opponents on a regular basis is a lot tougher in reality than it is on paper, especally when you are up against teams who have a good core of players. Australia's problem therefore is that they don't have enough players with the right skills to master each discipline and currently T20 is the area where they are falling behind. They are doing much better in Test cricket and have biounced back from the Ashes defeat but even there they are still yet to settle on the right team and their ODI team is making progress. The T20 WC is probably a year or two too early for them to make an impact - so for me quarter finals at best.

Mate any of 10 teams can win it including Australia, who would have tipped England to win the last one? By my calcs the winner will need to win at least 4 of 5 matches, the raw deal is that even if Australia wins it will hardly get a mention in the media.

The matches are not televised as they are on after midnight. When the team returns to Australia there will probably be about 6 fans at the airport to welcome them regardless of the result.

As for your BQ I dont think its possible for any team to become a super power in this format, the winning or losing margins are just too small and there is too much luck involved, I think its boring rubbish but still I will probably pay $$ to attend at least one match this summer so technically that makes me a t20 supporter?

Not a lot and to be honest there is little interest in it when will be on. Nothing to do with the cricket but this is set during our football finals, rugby league, AFL and to a lesser extent, club rugby. Because of the rubbish T20, the Sheffield Shield now starts in September so T20 can dominate over the January school holidays. Like the T20 WC, who's going to care about the Shield during the footy finals period. If we thought any and all forms of cricket were the be all and end all of all sports, fair enough but here we don't.

BQ No. It's a contrived form of the game. Smaller boundaries, different rules of the game, a super over, what next, toss a coin? rock, scissors, paper?

Well the rankings are a bit of a joke in T20, if you look at all the losing margins Australia has had most of them are 10 runs or less and a few of them have come down to the last couple of balls, if Australia had scored 5-10 more runs in most of their matches they would be close to being ranked #1, but it really comes down to the fact that hardly anyone in Australia really cares about T20 anyway, our domestic T20 comp is a circus with retired players in their 40s doing as well as others half their age, most Australian cricket fans would gladly accept last place in the T20 rankings if we could get back to #1 in Test and ODI,

As you rightly covered it, in T-20 anything can happen.

On paper though, the Aussie team does consist of several individual players with abundant talent and to me they really don't look anything at all like a 10th ranker by far. On paper they do have a reasonable chance and as Joeblow points out, they were the runners-up in the previous edition in the Windies where the wickets are as slow and sluggish these days as in Srilanka.

What however goes against them is the fact that they are not sufficiently enthused and charged up by public support in their own country for this format of the game and I suspect that Bailee as the Captain isn't probably the right choice since he doesn't carry enough credibility and authority opposite the few seniors in the team who happen to be the key match-winners as well.

In summary, the team looks good enough on paper with respect to individual talents, but the team spirit looks a bit baggie grey.

Australia has no chances to win the T20 World cup. Because their performances dropped down. Warner, Watson , Hussey are not performing well.
