    photocell is term used for devices sensitive to light. it is built around light sensor such as photo resistor, photo diode or photo transistor.

    light causes photo sensitive device to change it's electrical properties resulting in change of current or voltage. this can be used by circuit to produce output that can control other things (start or stop something, for example turn on street light when the ambient light is low etc.).

    applications are many, detecting part presence (industrial automation), safety (light curtains for example), counting (products on conveyor line for example), alerting (someone walking into a store) etc.
