What is the micron thickness of Gold-filled metal?
Hi.. I am thinking of purchasing a gold filled item and was told that the thickness of gold used on GF is 50 to 100 times thicker than plating. However, I need to know, generally, how thick (in terms of microns) is the gold layer on gold filled jewellery? Thanks in advance.
Thanks Patrick. Yes, I read up on that article and it was very helpful but I need to know the specific thickness in microns. I guess I will try to speak to a jeweler but the problem is where I live Gold filled has not quite caught on as yet and so it is a relatively little known craft. In fact, we do not even manufature GF jewellery over here. I think it is mainly used in the US and Europe so I thought someone would be able to help on here.

talk to an honest jeweler about it and they should be able to explain it better.
if your going to buy gold solid gold is always the best. but according to the ebay link gold filled is far superior then gold plated but still not as good as solid gold.
