You don't really "join" the Merchant Marines. It is a job, just like any other employer/employee relationship. Can you be a Merchant Marine and be in the National Guard? Sure you can. You're only limitation will be the type and kind of job you take in the Merchant Marines. Obviously, you would have to take a shore, inland river, or coastal waterway position that allows you to meet your National Guard obligations - which would of course, eliminate any ocean passage or oversea duty.

According to national guard, yes. You just need to take a weekend off every month to train with them. Tried explaining that I'LL BE ON A SHIP FOR 6 MONTHS!, but they couldn't get that idea through their thick heads.

You dont really join anything. You apply for a license from the Coast guard.
