For all you showing peoples!!!?
I'm off to my first inhand championships this winter with my boy. He's only 2 so were going in youngstock and coloured and spotted. My problem is he grows his winter woolies like nobodys business and looks like a hairball. Would I be allowed to hunter clip him so the judges can still see his muscle and shape nicely? His classes require him to be plaited and trimmed anyway but he would not look flashy at all in the ring in his winters!! Any advice/experience appreciated!

Any judge worth their salt can see through winter coats in winter. Personally I like youngstock to look like youngstock, I don't like them clipped, rugged and produced to look like adults, because they are not adults! However there are judges who do like that look on a youngster, and if you want to pander to them go ahead. Some will reward you for it, if you were showing in front of me I'd bump you down the line for it, but there are lots of people who won't, and to be honest the further south you go through the UK (and I presume you are UK from your use of British terms and spellings!) the more produced they like to see youngsters. Me, I'm Scottish, I like a two year old to look two. But I'm old-fashioned like that.

You will want to inquire with someone who shows on this particular circuit. Full body clipping may be the norm (very possible if it is higher level circuit) or winter fuzzies may be entirely acceptable. Either way, standing out as the person who does things differently from everyone else will send a negative signal to the judge.

I would suggest clipping him shortly before the show, so you don't have to clip so short and he can grow it back right after. There are a few horses at my barn that are the same way, we wait until a day or two before the show so it doesn't have to be clipped as short...since it is winter.

I would try a full clip if you want him to not be so fuzzy (my horse has that too).
Or you could try a classic hunter clip, for the hunter look.
