Why can't people carry swords around for self defense when they can carry around guns for self defense?

I just think it's stupid that a person could get arrested for carry around a sword and a person carrying a gun won't. If possible im thinking about buying a katana when im 18 and planning on getting into a martial art like kumdo to learn how to use my sword. Guns are just as dangerous and a lot of people use them for bad reasons. A sword requires skill and discipline to use whereas with a gun you can just point and shoot. A sword can do enough damage to a person in a self defense situation without killing them but with a gun you can make one mistake and accidentally kill the person. All I would have to do is to unsheath the sword a little bit and say firmly "get away from me." If it gets more extreme I can lightly slash them and run away. The way I put it is that if I see a person walk in a public place with a sheathed gun then I should be able to be in a public place carrying a sword. For example if a person walked into a restaurant with a sword (sheathed) what would most likely happen?

The restaurant would probably ask you to check the sword into a cloakroom as it would look too threatening to other customers. Otherwise, who said that swords aren't aloud? They are just fairly inconvenient to carry around, so most people don't.

You should never, never use a deadly weapon (like a knife, a gun, or a sword) just to intimidate someone, because if he calls your bluff suddenly you don't have many options and they're all the wrong ones. If you're scared of being mugged, keep a decoy wallet on you with some expired cards and maybe five dollars in it. If you can, run away. If you can't, give them your decoy. If they are still intent on causing you physical harm, a much better choice than a sword is a section of pipe or something similar.

If you're that scared that you're going to be assulted by someone who wants to kill you rather than take your money carry around a knife and never, never take it out unless you are prepared to possibly kill someone who's trying to kill you. If you get stopped, say you work in a restaurant and it's for your job or something.

Swords look badass, mate, but they're not an ideal self defence weapon anymore. Even people like cartels who use machetes in combat situations usually use them to attack people offensively. Like you, I think the world would be a more awesome place if people carried swords instead of guns, but as it is...

Most cops are fine even if you say it's for martial arts. Not sure of the actual laws in the US, but here in BC anything that's not a gun is considered a 'tool' and you're allowed to carry it around unhidden.

I'm not sure there is any law stating that you can not carry a sword on your person, even in NY State!

Having said that ... it would be rather bulky, most swords are fairly heavy, and in a self defense situation against an attacker armed with a gun ... you would most certainly lose.

I take exception to your statement that "with a gun you can just point and shoot". Obviously you do not know much about guns. Using a gun accurately and properly takes quite a bit of skill, training and practice. You would probably be shocked at the number of hours most people that carry guns regularly spend on a range just practicing and busting caps. Smart gun owners are highly proficient in the use of their firearms ... just as a smart sword owner would practice the use of their weapon of choice.

It is not illegal to carry around a sword. There is a guy who dresses up like a ninja and carries a katana around in my jurisdiction. He's nuts.

If you carried a sword into a restaurant, they'd call the police, and the police would arrest you.

It's not legal to carry a gun openly in most places. The police would respond for that, too. Having a concealed weapon is different...

i could carry a sword around here in georgia considering i have a carry permit.

guns are more efficient and easier to conceal in my opinon.
