There are many types of hair restoration techniques available. There's traditional hair restoration which is a manual hair extraction technique that relies on differing skill levels of each doctor or technician in a time consuming and technically difficult procedure to perform by removing the follicles one at a time using a punch tool. Because of the extended lengths of time needed to extract each follicle, only 500-700 grafts per session can be extracted, and the viability of the grafts become an issue

There is also a new procedure called Neograft which is a state of the art FDA approved automated hair transplant system which does away with the painful linear incision. The procedure is virtually painless with no scalpel, or linear scar so that healing is quick and will allow men to continue to have short hairstyles if desired.

There are two surgical methods that a shown varying levels of success: strip excision harvesting and follicular unit extraction. Strip harvesting is the most common technique. It involves removing hair and follicles from a donor site, typically coming from the back and sides of the scalp. A scalpel is used to remove strips of hair-bearing tissue from the donor site. After removal, the strip is cut into small units of hair follicles and replace where needed.
