Married in Vegas, but I'm not American...Am I really married?

I'm Canadian and a resident of Canada, as is my wife. 5 years ago we flew down to Vegas and got married. We got a license and everything was done in the traditional AND legal sense. But I was just watching a TV show (yes I know...don't believe everything you see on TV) that suggested that unless you're a US citizen, my marriage never happened.

Can anyone tell me if there's any truth to this, please? I'm kinda worried.

That TV show was nonsense. You're married and your license is valid no matter where you live.

Sorry people, it's NOT valid until you register it with the proper authorities in YOUR country in the proper manner. As one other poster said, the UK would not recognize it unless you register it legally through the proper channels, and this goes for most other countries (I am European originally so I know the whole saga one has to go through). Canada MAY have different laws so don't post here and check with an expert.

I know because I have been there and done that.

You'll probably still need to register it with your local authorities, certainly that's what needs to happen in the UK to make it all nice'n'legal and get your married-mans tax allowance

The US recognizes this as a legal marriage.

You need to confirm the Canadian government does. Most countries will recognize the marriage if you send certification to the appropriate agency in your area....

Time to start calling around and see what you need to do to get this cleared up...

I have numerous relatives that live in Canada, and my understanding is the Canadian Crown will accept an American marriage certificate, just as the U.S. will accept a Canadian marriage certificate.
