Where did the phrase "catch my drift" come from?

    Well think about it. If I'm saying something that might be Completely off tangent to what your saying, I'm going on a different "drift". So when I explain my thought process, I want to make sure you understand where I'm coming from, so I ask you "do you catch my drift?" or simply- "do you understand this thought process I'm having at the moment?"
