Is it ok for diabetics to balance high sugar foods with insulin?
My grandma has a bad sweet-tooth and seems to think it's ok to balance out her deserts with a lot of insulin, but I don't think that it's good for her, and I am concerned. Are there any diabetics out there who can shed some light on the topic?

This is the newest way to treat diabetes. It is how an insulin pump works.
You take insulin to cover the carbs you eat.

..... it's fine. I'm diabetic. That's WHY we take insulin, so we can eat things with carbs. your body makes insulin to accommodate for foods that are higher in sugar unless you're diabetic, then it doesn't and you have to inject it instead. You can still eat the sugar, you're just getting the insulin through a pen instead of a pancreas. Let the woman eat her cake.

I do it, too. We older people are not going to live forever. And high sugar intake may ward off depression in us ( i e committing suicide - which is fatal right now); so it is the lesser of 2 evils.
For the record, doctors prefer (sometimes adamantly state) that everyone should reduce sugar intake because it causes inflammation of the joints and leads to arthritis. Too much food of any type (except vegetables) can lead to weight gain and obesity; but, hey .... other people smoke and drink.
But carbohydrate wise, there is not much difference between dessert and pasta or rice. Cake and bread are both made out of wheat flour. Even fruit juice is laden with sugar (especially grape juice).
So do not nag. Life is short. Let her have her simple pleasure.
