Why does GOP want to spend billions on more new combat aircraft when we barely use the ones we have already?

Because they plan on starting wars if they ever get back into office like they always do.

It's not the use of them that matters. It's the show of strength. Ask any black belt martial artist - they don't go around looking for fights, and the fact that they are extremely good fighters prevents them from being attacked, and makes their friends feel safe in their midst.

While nuclear disarmament can be thought of as a pretty good idea globally, it has some practical disadvantages in the real world. When we have the majority of nukes, when we have a strong military, our smaller allies feel less need to arm themselves or work toward a nuclear capability.

When we disarm, and dismantle things like our missile defense system in Poland, these smaller countries feel intense pressure to take their defense on themselves, and seek some pretty destructive weaponry.

The result of this is a much more dangerous world. Israel feels threatened by Iran, they can't necessarily trust us to come to their defense, they seek to expand their nuclear arsenal and the situation in the Middle East grows more unstable and more dangerous. When the Soviet Union was brought down, smaller countries with less-than-stable leadership began to explore their own nuclear ambitions, and suddenly there's another cold war going on in Eastern Europe. When we turn our backs on our allies there, they have to take matters into their own hands.

A strong US military did a lot for US relations around the world. We have exposed ourselves as a "Paper Tiger"; our enemies are emboldened and our friends have been betrayed.

We don't have to use them for them to be effective.

in the modern age, the war is likely to last a few days at most. That means that if you don't win the first few engagements, you've probably lost the war.

And those first few engagements will be, at least in part, in the sky.
