Ready for a national ID?

Could this serve as a voter ID? In 2005 Congress passed a national ID law called REAL ID. Every state must be in compliance by January 15, 2013. The announced intent is greater security and faster processing at airports, government facilities, etc.

To get REAL ID you must present proof of the following: full legal name, date of birth, legal address, and Social Security Number.

Those born before 1964 can keep their current ID for now, but must have the REAL ID by September 2017. I am assuming that, if they plan to travel, they may want to get the REAL ID sooner.

Critics of the law expressed concerns about the government ability to use the IDS to track ordinary citizens.

I don't know why people would be so concerned about a national ID anymore. I remember they were going to introduce one in Australia in the 1980s and it howled down. I also know that when electronic tags for tollways were introduced around the US, people thought they were being spied on, and in the UK, people initially cried foul over the huge number of cctv cameras installed in major metro areas...

Why should people not be bothered with a national ID card now? The Internet and more specifically, Facebook and smartphones. Every time you post on Facebook, not even with a location update, your coordinates are geotagged and sent to an archive in the Library of Congress. With the internet's rise, people have VOLUNTEERED to surrender a certain level of privacy. There's nothing an ID card could do that isn't already being done.

No, what I'm ready for is 50 different STATE I.D.s that operate on a coordinated system as a result of cooperation among the states, which is what "REAL ID" actually is.

The problem with a drivers license being needed to vote is that many people don't have a driver's license.
