Usually nothing bad at all. There was a time when most women did just that.

My niece is going through her third pregnancy now. She quit for her first two, but this time has decided to only cut down to 4 cigarettes a day, which her doctor is allowing as long as she stays with the same 4 a day through 4 months of breastfeeding before she goes back to her usual pack a day.

Okay, first off! The child will NOT be born with lung cancer!

Second, I smoked with my little one. Honestly i can tell you it was a HUGE mistake! My son was born at 34 weeks gestation weighing a little over 4 lbs. He needed to spend 2 weeks in the NICU because of his prematurity. He used a CPAP, Oxi-hood, and nasal cannula to help him breathe for the first 2 weeks of his life. I finally got to hold him when he was FOUR days old! I was not able to feed him, or even barely touch him until then. I honestly regret my decision to smoke everyday. I did quit, but it was too late! The damage was done!

Usually nothing. My mom smoked through all three of her pregnancies, and we were all fine. Most moms did that 4o years ago and almost all their kids we fine. I've always felt better about quitting during my pregnancies though, in fact I like to quit for a full year so I can breastfeed nicotine free as well, but that's just me. Most moms who quit like to start again as soon as they deliver.
