kobo or sony ereader?
I did some extensive research last year, and ended up buying a sony prs-350 which I absolutely love. But, last week the screen stopped working and sony wants a ridiculous amount of money to fix it. So now I have to get a new one. It seems that now there are a few more options available in Australia. Last year, when I was looking, the kobo wasn't very good, but now seems to have updated their model. Sony also has new readers out. I'm not interested in Kindle at all, because I don't like that they lock you into their format, and already have a lot of epubs.
I'm finding it difficult to find relevant reviews, because in the last year, everything seems to have become more complicated. I don't care about wifi, I don't need to update my social sites about what I'm reading. I use an independent site for buying ebooks, which is cheaper than kobo, sony or amazon. I am looking for an ereader that lets me read. And thats about it. I use an ereader almost exactly how I use a book. I pick it up and I read it. When I'm finished, I pick up another book. I'm looking for the best ereader that will let me do this.
There have been some reports saying the kobo is slow, and others saying that the sony freezes. I would really like some opinions on these two, as they are the only practical options in australia. I liked being able to sort my books into folders on my sony, but the lack of support and the huge price difference has me leaning more towards the kobo.
And while some may say, just read normal books, I travel a lot on a budget, which means space and weight exist at a premium. So while I'd love to have a suitcase full of books, its not possible, and an ereader becomes necessary, especially on a 14 hr flight.

i have the latest Sony ereader and have had it since it came out as I had it on preorder. I have always gotten Sony ereaders, this is my third. None of mine have ever had any problem. My other 2 are still working but I upgraded to the sony prs-T1 for the wireless, size, functions etc. It is super easy to use. It never freezes. The battery lasts long and charges fast with the basic charger most cell phones use now besides apple. I bought the standard case from sony for it to protect it but also because I like to hold my ereader like a real book. The case is so good. The ereader snaps into the inside so its secure and the case is hard. I get all my books free through the overdrive system here in the US. Click on the austrailia area you are in to see if you can get free books to check out: http://search.overdrive.com/classic/ For an example here is my overdrive site in my state where i check out my books: http://dbooks.wplc.info/6618BE34-02A9-4C0E-AC6B-C5...
I cannot comment on Kobo because I never even saw one.
Like i said I have the Sony and love it. Its super easy to use, books download in seconds and I get most of my books free from the overdrive. I can buy books from any site that accepts sony format which includes from the Kobo book site where I have bought a few books from.
It also has many dictionaries including translation which is great and functions like highlighting, notetaking, etc.
If you dont care about wifi and all those other features then you could just buy a used ereader older model for super cheap. They have many of them on craig's list in our town for like 40 bucks.
But if you want new I have had no problems with any of my Sony's and the latest I really like and it never freezers or anything and super easy page turning, fast, etc.

I'd go with another Sony. I have one that's around 4 years old and still works fine. I think they're very well made, although I prefer my Kindle.

To find good deals, keep in mind that: Different sites have different opportunities, so I think it's a good idea to check them all.
Also search for advance booking, and avoid (if possible) weekends.
And, if you find a good one, always remember to read the fare rules or terms and conditions....
