Since male primary school teachers are underrepresented...?

Since male primary school (K-5) teachers are severely underrepresented in the school system, should the government enforce a gender quota?

Say, 40% of primary school teachers MUST be male, or else the school or district faces fines and penalties.

We're all for gender equality here, aren't we? Seems fair. What do (the collective) you think about it? Yay or nay for gender quotas? Please elaborate if you feel up to it.

Please and thank you. Baked potato.

    Noooo

This is Affirmative Action for gender, which can lead to people who are MORE qualified being passed over by people who are LESS qualified, simply because of (in this case) gender. It's a ridiculous concept, ruling out the best, simply because there are too many of them, in favor of people who are "underrepresented".

In the end, this would end up harming the innocent- the children.

All tests, all hiring, all resumes, should be blind to race, religion, gender, etc. Let the top qualified get the job.

Nay for gender quotas of all sorts.

However, yay for the social encouragement and solicitation of underrepresented demographics into any field. I'd look at underrepresented men among primary school teachers the same way I look at underrepresented women in science and engineering: no quotas, no special scholarships, no double standards, but doing things like raising awareness of the gender inequality among college freshman and doing outreach programs to try to break down any stigmas associated with one sex is definitely a good thing to be doing.

What the hell do you even have to teach primary school kids anyway...?

But no quotas... If men aren't interested there's probably a reason for that, no need to enforce some ridiculous quota and then trying to entice men into the position or any man/woman for that matter.

I do not believe in quotas, for men or for women. But I do think men should be encouraged to teach children, because many children do not have male role models, and many boys are falling behind in school. I think the solution is to remove the stigma around men being near children.

I think currently the popular perception is that only men can abuse children, and so a man who expresses interest in being around children is suspect. It needs to be publicized that a) not all pedophiles are male, and b) not all child abuse is sexual, so that people realize that there is no more reason to suppose that a man will abuse a child than there is that a woman will.

Uhh - this sounds like a modified version of Title IX, only it pertains to primary school teachers.

I'm against ALL gender quotas and preferential treatment, so I'd be against this on principle.

    Good question.

I have asked this before. Areas face risk of charges put against them if a workplace has a male majority, yet it is never brought up when women are the majority in an area, right?

This is a sure example of double standards.

Quotas hurt everybody. Especially when cops have to give out an XYZ number of speeding tickets.

Hurts me, that is. Fois Gras.

Yes, but we first have to change the work place itself to accommodate the needs of the male teachers.

All that estrogen rage is making the work environment too inhospitable for an average man.

I think they should hire the best person for the job, whether male or female. Gender quotas, whether in favor of women or men, are wrong in my opinion.

Qualified Men are too afraid of feminist law to be in such career, for they would be fired/ imprisoned for even a hear-say of the Pedophile witch-hunt feministed laws.
