Football fans, do you realize there's only 1 referee in a game?

yeah dude...they should just be referred to as officialls. it's kinda like trying to argue that someone from China isnt Asian just since they are a Chinese citizen. tomato/tomaato IMO

Actually officials is a better term, but the term referee refers to anybody making a neutral judgment on a sports event to settle a difference according to the rules. So in this case official or referee can be used regardless to their job. Even a times keeper is a referee who keeping track of the time in a game, but his position is off the field. So by those definitions I think you should rethink that position by checking the terms closer before spouting off like a teacher or an expert......The referee you are referring to is the head official, but he still has to listen to others who saw the play better and helped him make a determination based on the facts and not the teams crying this way or that way. The Seattle game with the Packers, one guy who had position called it right, but the head official botched the job. He didn't assess the facts because he based it on no information or poor observations.....

In a game that's true but any official can also be be referred to as a referee.

The official with the white hat can also be called the head referee while the others are called referees.

You're right, but your point isn't going to carry much weight seeing as people are just going to refer to them as referees. Even then it's the ref that makes the calls and reviews the game film for challenges and what not, the fans are happy to have THEM back.
