I am getting a hamster, which should I choose?

I am geting a hamster. I want to be able to handle it alot, and play with it. I dont want a robo, or a long-haired Syrian. Mostly i am choosing between Fancy hamster, and Short-haired Syrian. I also need help choosing a gender. I am only getting one, and i was thinking that i dont want babies, just in case the genders were mixed, but i heard that when male hamsters go through puberty, they r aggresive. i need a young one so i can train it. I also need help picking a place where 2 get my hamster. i looked at petco and petsmart, but i heard and read that i should get from a shelter. which shelters can i get a hamster at??? thanks!

Fancy hamsters and Syrian hamsters are the same thing, both Syrians. And yes, get only one, because they WILL fight, no matter which gender and how old they are and how long they have been together. They'll fight. Also, I'd suggest going to petfinder.com to find a pet. Just type in that you want Small and Furry - Hamster - then your zip code or City, State.

I would say anything BUT a dwarf hamster. I've grown up with hamsters and dwarfs are always the agressive ones. And as far as male or female goes, I've had both and I havent noticed a difference in personality. I would recommend getting it from PetsMart, Ive never gotten a sick pet from there. Ive gotten 2 hamsters from PetCo, and both died within a month from Wet Tail, which they obviously had when I baught them. When buying a pet hamster from a pet store just make sure that it, or any other hamsters in the same cage, doesn't have diarrhea. That is a sign of Wet Tail, which kills hamsters.

I had a Teddy Bear hamster, she was wonderful. Playful and adorable. I had a dwarf, and she was tiny and adorable, but she was aggressive. Did not like to be held.

Call local shelters, the shelter I work at has a hamster, but only one. Mostly guinea pigs and bunnies. And then others.

Teddy bear hamsters are probably your best choice. They are cute and friendly! I also love dwarf hamsters. :)
