Question about securing internet connection?
We have a hardwired broadband connection with a standard cable box. We do not to my knowledge have a box capable of wifi.
We have a home behind ours that the neighbors seem to come and go and be gone for several days and then back. I have noticed when they are home our computer really seems to lag. Like when you log in, and click on the internet the homepage lags sometimes for up to two or three minutes before loading. (They appear gone now, and it connected immediately.)
I also noticed under the (devices section, it shows two monitors and we only have one.)
I don't use a router because we have hardwired cable/internet "are we supposed to have one anyway for security reasons?"
What settings should I set up like Home, Public? Which is the most secure?
Re-read the question. We don't have a wifi capable internet box. Please answer if you have experience in this area. I know my best bet is to have it serviced? Is the .gov website still available to check it on and would that even help? I do not want anyone using our connection period.

hi ., now there is a few things we should check so on your modem how many lights do you see? is there one light on for wireless? this is where a lot of people by no fault of their own is drawing from your wireless where they think they are drawing from their own. but still something would have to be wrong somewhere to slow your internet down so this is what i highly recommend call your internet service provider and speak to their tech support they will be able to give you the best answer. to get online it is through a gateway and somehow these neighbors are interfereing with that gateway so this is a problem that can easily be taken care of through a new modem. now to get wifi if you want wifi just change your network card now what is a network card? it is your network adapter so this is a easy one to handle change your video card. good luck i hope i was helpful to you
Source(s): or you might want to discuss this problem with a computer repairman he can do all kinds of things to fix this problem so this is a smart thing to do. so begin an investigation on this issue no telling what you can find out but it is a good learning experience for you. so don't let it die and moving on to something else find out the answer at all cost. take care :) - ?Lv 45 years ago
