    Say the number of one room is x. Then the other will be x + 2, since they are both even, and even numbers are 2 apart. The sum of them is 1038, so we can set up an equation:

    x + (x + 2) = 1038

    2x + 2 = 1038

    2x = 1036

    x = 518

    So, plugging these back in to x and x+2, the room numbers are 518 and 520.

    x+2+x+4=1038

    x=516

    518+520=1038

    The room numbers of two adjacent classrooms are two consecutive even numbers. If their sum is 1038 , find the classroom numbers

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    n + (n+2) = 1038

    2n + 2 = 1038

    2n = 1036

    n = 518; next room number is 520.
