When will the average atheist in the street learn what the appendix does for humans?

How many more times must we see the same nonsense question from ignorant "pseudo-intellectual" wannabes, who obviously dropped out of school aged 12?

    Indeed.

I groaned at that one too.

On the other hand, it is good "cannon fodder".

Why should atheists know any more about the appendix than theists? Most would hardly know they have one. Atheists do not believe in gods. That's it. That is all you can say about atheists and all we have in common. If you want to discuss whether scientists know the uses of the appendix and what part it plays in evolution then you need to ask scientists not atheists. They are not necessarily the same thing.

As with many vestigial organs, and the appendix is one whether you like it or not, it has evolved other uses. It provides a small boost to the immune system but it is not so important that we cannot do without it. Perhaps if you had paid attention in biology class (presuming you went to a real school that taught biology and not some Christian pseudo-school), you would know this.

Who told you that "vestigial" means "without function?"

And why did you believe them?

You calling someone "pseudo-intellectual" is like a couch potato criticizing a marathoner for not setting a world record.

Why would a deity create an organ whose only function was to help recover from a disease, when diseases didn't exist at the time of the creation? Particularly when it doesn't carry out that function very well?

Erm, well healthy bacteria can become trapped in there when someone is vomiting and having diarrhoea causing them to recover faster? However, other stuff also gets trapped in there and then it gets infected causing appendicitis - nearly always fatal until recent surgical advances. Surely you are not suggesting that God said 'Hmm, if I put this little organ in here people will recover from stomach bugs a few hours earlier - millions will die of course but hey...' I think not. Its clearly a shrunken stomach which used to digest tough vegetation as found in other mammals.

I love how theists assume that if we do not yet know the rational answer to an annoying question, then we can NEVER find it out.

Is there nothing in between what 21st century humans have already discovered and that which can only be known by the gods?

Not sure how this qualifies as a question. Questions ask for information from people. This one doesn't, its only purpose seems to be to insult.

Is this about the appendix being vestigial? I do wish people would spend five minutes on the Wiki before claiming to be experts on some subject:

When will you people realise there's only ONE thing ALL atheists have in common?

None of us has a belief in the existence of gods.

What has an appendix got to do with atheism?

    Sheesh

When will you people stop giving stupid people a bad name?

So what do you think the appendix does for humans?

  • So when it impacts and threatens to kill the patient, that's part of god's design too? And when it's removed without any negative effect whatsoever, that, well, makes a bit of a hash of your important organ argument.

After googling for a bit, I too would like you to educate us. Because all I can find are proposed functions (proposed by those evil scientists - using evolutionary underpinnings no less), not definite functions.

Source(s): I wonder what would happen if we charted "prayer-assisted appendix problems" vs "medically-assisted appendix problems". Because I think a lot of people died before we discovered the right medical procedures. Through science, not prayer. But hey, when yours goes, feel free to not go see a doctor and ask your god for assistance. See how that works out.
