Why do political debates need a moderator between 2 grown men? It's a debate not a Q&A?

I used to be in debate team during my high school days, and believe me, a moderator is EXTREMELY vital to keep a heated debate civil.

While you're right about the Q&A part, the moderator plays a vital role in debates. If it weren't for the moderator, the debate would be more about who can talk the most over the other. The moderator ensures both candidates have equal speaking time, so that one does not have an unfair advantage over the other (at least in the aspect of time).

Moderators are an integral part of debating.

It's not a debate. It is a staged infomercial . If it were a debate it would have the other two candidates also .

If you are just shooting hoops with your friends, you don't need a referee. But if you are trying to play and score a match against a rival team, one is usually needed.

The Democrats are not comfortable unless they think they can cheat in some way, like being refereed by the liberal media.

Seriously? Without questions prepared it would just be a snarking match. More so for Obama....
