Problem with Lexmark printer quality?

I have a lexmark s300-400 series, and two days ago, I installed a brand new black ink cartridge. Nonetheless, whenever I try to print anything, it's so light you can barely even read it. I had to print my school assignments in bold so that they were even a little bit legible. I've done everything I can think of--taking the cartridge out, shaking it up, cleaning the inside of the printer, printing out alignment pages, etc. Nothing is working. How do I fix this problem? I really need this damn thing to work!!!!!!

Update:

Thanks Misty, but I don't think the cartridge is the problem. It printed lightly even with my old cartridge, just never THIS poorly. Anyway, I touched a napkin to the cartridge and some very wet ink came out, so I don't think it's dried out. There's got to be some mechanical issue with the printer, but I'm at a loss...

Update 2:

No, they are not set to 'draft' or 'photo.' They're set to "automatic". I've experimented with that, even putting the quality as "best". The quality wasn't any better.

You might want to check your printer properties & printing preferences to make sure they are set correctly. If they are set to Photo or draft, then they will likely print out light on regular paper.

    UPDATE:

Have you checked the paper type settings in both the printer driver & the application you're using? Make sure the paper type is set to plain & not some other type like photo.

H there. I had basically the same problem with my color cartridges about a month ago. I took my printer to Staples , thats where I bought it. I even had a difficult time installing all the cartridges. They where nice enough to do that for me. Getting to your question, I had to bring it back because of the color quality. He told me that somtimes the ink does dry out in the package, so he popped another new one and no problems. If you happened to keep your reciept the will exchange it for you at most places. Even if you did,nt, you could tell them a little fib and tell them lexmark advised you to return it.( by this I mean the ink cartridges of couurse) If that doesnt work call Lexmark, or if you did,nt buy it there, again a little fib wont hurt. Heads up though, if you do decide to fib, when you bring it down they will ask for your address and look it up in their records so say it was a gift. And you dont know aunt ???,s address and phone #. Hope this will resolve this for you,Misty.

The printer head has dried, this is a part of the printer itself. If the print head cleaning are not helping the situation then it may be time to replace the printer.

IN the interim, since you do need to print, switch your font colour to dark green and print your assignment.

My Lexmark print trio has a situation with the energy adapter in the back of it. I wedged a folded piece of paper under it and now it makes contact well adequate to work correct. You may be experiencing the equal hindrance. Just raise the plugin upwards while it's within the machine and notice if it powers up.If that is so,wedge a folded paper beneath it and cushty it up sufficient to make certain your desktop stays on.
