Looking for a good commuter bike?
My car engine bit it, and I am looking for a decent commuter bike for under $400 to get to and from work. I have a slightly hilly, short ride (a few miles each way), and also have in the past with my old bike (a Gary Fisher hybrid) enjoyed peddling around on short rides (~10 miles, I'm a lazy cycler) on weekends. Any suggestions? Price is important since I'm going to be paying a LOT to get my car going again :(
I'm also very tall-6', 34" inseam.
The hybrid had some mechanical issues (I got it at a bike auction) and also wouldn't fit in my moving truck during my last move, so it's toasted too. I'd actually go for a hybrid over a road bike, the roads where I live are rough.

Your best bet is to stick with a hybrid, the cheapest "on brand" bike i know of is Jamis, but they aren't exactly top of the line, yet better than walmart lol. However, why settle for a 400 dollar new bike that's not even halfway great? try and find a $200 craigslist special!

Hybrid or Road Bike. For 400 you can get a decent bike on craigslist. Remember not to buy cheap parts. A road bike does not replace many parts so if you take long rides on a cheap bike your going to have to pay more then what the bike was worth to replace the parts.

What happened to your hybrid?
A road bike usually costs more.
Update:
Although it a bit over $400, this bike has superior components. Go to any other line, and get Cassette rear hub, double wall rims and non-Tourney components, and it will be much more.
KHS is not one of the big brands, but it more bang for buck company.

Just use your $400 to get a tune up and put a rack, fenders, and lights on your Gary Fisher. That will make a fine commuter.
