How can I stop being a xenophobe?
When I was 12, I was told I was one of the best people in the world because I was a white, male, American Catholic (now ex-). This caused me to look down my nose at other races, women and girls, foreigners, and non-Catholics.

What incentives were you given as a child to see other groups as lesser? Did your parents and other authority figures have superficial standards they judged people by? If so, what do you imagine would have happened if you challenged them on it?
Generally people create these kinds of false realities as a way of avoiding the reality of how their own worth was judged as a child as doing so would be incredibly painful.
Being older now, how do you determine your own self worth? Are there standards that roughly fit this kind of superficial stuff you describe in your question?
That's where I would start.
