What do I do if a find a store that is selling counterfeit alcohol UK?

Okay I know that this probably sounds stupid, but what I'm about to say is real and is going on everywhere.

I think that I have bought some fake alcohol as the (HM Revenue & Customs) pink sticker on the back of the bottle doesn't look genuine, also I shined a UV light on the customs sticker and it didn't illuminate.

Are all UK HM Revenue & Customs labels suppose to illuminate under UV light?

There are some numbers on the back of the bottle, so is their a website to where I can type in the number thats on the back of the bottle to find out if its genuine or not?

I really hope that this isn't a fake as I've drank this a number of times in the past and something just isn't right about it.

Can I sue if this bottle of alcohol turns out to be a fake?

Customs and Excise have very limited enforcement resources. There is a lot of joint working with Police and Trading Standards on this and you should contact either the local TS department or the licensing section of the police.

The stamp should fluoresce but some fakes do now. It is important to report it because some fakes contain excess methanol which can cause serious health issues. Around 30 people in the Czech republic died recently from drinking fake spirits.

The alcohol is probably real, but the tax stamp may be fake--a scam to save money and fees properly belonging to the government. Bring the bottle with the suspicious stamp to Inland Revenue and let them examine it. They will tell you how to proceed or they will take it from there.

  • I think if you are getting that paranoid about your alcohol you should consider topping use of it. And the cannabis you obviously smoke with it.

Revenue and Customs has an Investigations and Enforcement branch, contact them.

You should contact the Trading Standards Dept of your council.
