I don't see how they can get away with charging you money for an unsuccessful debit card transaction. If the transaction isn't being approved, how can they get authorization to take $1?

I would definitely call the customer services team so they can explain what has happened to you. Is there anything in the terms and condition - that you presumably had to agree to via check box - that states anything to this effect?

I would recommend making all online purchases using a credit card because you get additional protection from the credit card issuer. You don't get the same level of help when you pay using a debit card. For example, you would be able to recover your money if a merchant went insolvent.

I hope that they manage to sort this problem out for you.

If they have a customer service number, call that.
