Your opinion between a smooth verses rough collie for SD?

Update:

Personel preference is rough. The rough will be in need of continual grooming, but that is the collie. I'm really more concerned of the temperment I have only owned rough's but have heard the smooth's temperment is more rambunctious. As familier as I am with the rough's, the smooth I am not familier with

I love the look of the rough collie. I knew a couple of collie breeders in Ohio. One bred rough and one bred smooth. I really did not notice any difference in temperament between them. It is just a matter of short coat or long coat.

Friends of ours bought one of the rough coat collies and he was very energetic. He kept up with all us kids and running around herding the cows! They are very vocal dogs.

Smooth's are more energetic, retain more herding ability and instinct and aren't as introverted as the average rough collie. If you want a smooth, you'd need to be prepared to get involved in dog activities - obedience followed by whatever you're most interested in - herding, agility, obedience, rally, etc.

  • If gotten from a good breeder, either should be fine. They have enough health issues to make using a very good breeder a must.
