Help! IN the USA, lost my kids Passport!?

Looks like I have lost my kids passports AND their birth certificates (duh, why did I have them both in my bag!). How do I get them back across the border? What do I do? Note: My wife is back in Canada so she isn't here to sign anything either... So????

Looks like you are either mentally retarded or a scammer.

Nobody carries their birth certificate around when going on a vacation.

I call B.S. on your story.

First, you walk to a police station and file a police report. Report the passports lost/stolen. Police won't go much, but get a copy of the police report.

Second, you contact the Canadian embassy or consulate. Report the documents stolen/missing. They'll need a copy of the police report and (some) proof of ID. They may have to contact your wife via phone or have her fax information. They will either issue you a temporary passport (which you'll need if you are flying) and/or direct Border Services if you are crossing via a land crossing to be ready for you. You can expect that they'll want to ask questions and talk with your wife.

It is normally possible (at land crossings) to get in with just a driver's license, but children aren't so easy. Child smuggling and custody disputes are unfortunately an ongoing issue at the border.

I assume you have access to email and that your wife can scan/email her ID? If not, use a computer at a hotel. You presumably have a letter of permission from her, if not have her scan/email you another.

Now goes without saying to never carry birth certificates with you. I would also recommend scanning your passports, birth certificate, health cards, SIN cards, immunization/key medical records, driver's licenses, school admission forms, and a generic letter of permission, etc. and putting them on a secure web site. Then you can download them to your phone or print them off via a hotel computer.

You're all Canadian citizens? Go to nearest Canadian consulate for replacement passports or travel documents to get back to Canada.

If you were smart, you photocopied your + kids' passports and wife has them back home so she can fax them to the consulate. Or you carried photocopies in your wallet, etc. If you have copies, with the numbers or bar codes on them, it speeds up the process of replacement of lost/stolen passports.
