Washington D.C. weekend?
I am going to D.C. for the weekend with a couple of friends. We are staying in Arlington, V.A. (specifically in the Courthouse area). So we want to go to the Kettler Capitals Iceplex to go skating one night. But that is all we know we want to do. Any other ideas for things in the are that we can do? Obviously White House and other attractions like that but is there other stuff? And whats some good places for food? We will be walking/public transportation so things close to one another would be helpful. Thanks.

I'd skip the trip to the White House - and here is why. They no longer offer public tours of the White House, unless you have advance reservations made through your Congressman. Close-up, it's not that thrilling. Just an army of police officers and a group of ragged protestors in Lafayette Park. A much better view of the White House can be had from a distance, when you stand near the small hill where the Washington Monument stands and look toward Pennsylvania Avenue.
The Jefferson Memorial with the Tidal Basin and cherry trees is nicer. The Lincoln Memorial is also pretty cool. Aside from those attractions, why not visit the multiple Smithsonian Museums? The Air & Space Museum is worth a visit.

Courthouse is a good place to stay. If you walk up Wilson Boulevard toward Ballston, you'll pass through one of the best areas in Arlington. LOTS of good restaurants catering toward the 20-somethings. Some good shopping too, particularly in the Clarendon neighborhood (one block over from Wilson Boulevard).
There's a good place to eat at Ballston too, just downstairs from the iceplex--Rock Bottom Cafe (excellent burgers and beer).

for the White House, you need to make an appointment with your congressman several months in advance
public transportation is great. The Metro will go everywhere you want to go
visit the Smithsonian, Arlinton Cemetery, Supreme Court, Capitol Building, the monuments on the Mal, The National Zoo and Ford's Theater

unless you have tickets IN HAND already you will not be touring the White House.
Food runs the gamut from street vendors to 5 star international cuisine and everything in between.
the Mall alone will keep you busy the entire weekend and 99% of it is free. Each museum takes a day to go through though so choose wisely.
