How long can someone live with congestive heart failure, are we at the end?
My dad is pretty sick, he has extreme emphysema, COPD, only using 28% of his lung capacity, and stage IV lung cancer...I have to say he looked like he was holding his own until a couple of weeks ago. His lungs got fluid in there, we had a liter pulled out of each side, and he felt a bit better...then this week he began to get worse and worse, barely able to breath, very swollen legs, and we brought him in for an X-ray and the pulminologist said the fluid was back a bit but not enough to cause this level of difficulty, and he suspects congestive heart failure.
My dad is very weak, very tired, barely able to eat and now he gets out of breath with 3 steps and it takes a couple minutes for him to breath normally. He of COURSE still wants his chemo this week...but I honestly don't know how we would get him out of the house in this state.
Is this what it is like at the end of congestive heart failure?

NO one can tell you if this is the end. My mother was on the edge of death about 5 times... all my siblings would fly into town and she would rebound. But it does sound like it will not be too long. It is horribly stressful time for the family!! Try to take some time to relax during this difficult time.

This is the way it gets. You find that things don't heal up and resolve, they just get worse and worse. So you have to accept what capacities he still has. He does sounds as though he has multiple things going on, not just one disease. He would only get chemo if his blood tests qualify him. He won't have a choice about this.
Would suggest you do another thing. Do Christmas early. Don't wait until he cannot eat. Do it now. Decorate the house a little. Take lots of photos. How would you change things 6 months or a year from his death if you still could? Well, you can change things (to some extent) now.
