Return of the jedi vader question?

In return of the jedi, darth vader told Luke to turn to the darkside, to save his friends. Who was he talking about, though? Who did he mean by friends? Was he referring to Han, leia, chewbacca, lando, who Luke knew personally? Or when he said, "friends", did he use it as a synonym for "ally"-like the rebel alliance, who were on Luke's side? How could joining the empire help protect them, if joining the emperor meant going against them?

He meant the Rebel Alliance as a whole, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, ect.

Basically, Vader gave him a choice: Join the Darkside and his friends would be spared. Or resist and they die.

Most likely it was a lie to get Luke to join Vader.

    Hope this Helps.

The Death Star was unloading blasts at the Rebel cruisers out in space. If Luke joined the emperor and Vader, they'd have stopped firing and let the rebels flee as they now know the death star was fully operational. It was revealed by Palpatine that he had leaked the information about the Death Star being not yet operational, and how to destroy it- knowing full well Luke would come in a final assault like he did in the first movie. Only this time, they were prepared.

So he meant, quite literally, if he joined the darkside, Luke's friends would not be blasted by the Death Star. If he refused, he had to watch them being murdered from out the window of the Emperor's chamber.
