Would you spend £425,000 to see Alicia Keys?

It has emerged a one-off concert starring Alicia Keys cost Manchester City Council £425,000 to stage last month.

The spending is to be investigated by a watchdog, with the Taxpayers' Alliance slamming the figure as "absolutely preposterous". The council, however, has defended its actions, saying it helped to organise the concert to showcase the city's global profile.

I'm all for arts and culture, but at a time when frontline services are being slashed and thousands of workers laid off, was it genuinely a wise move by the council?

The Manchester City Council members who approved this should be immediately fired! And what is this about 'showcasing Manchester City'? What nonsense! Are they saying people in the UK will know where Manchester city is now? Are they saying that it will bring in more revenues from advertising in this way? Of course it's ludicrous. Even the Olympics has proven that 'showcasing' without investing money in infrastructure, jobs, and local businesses doesn't do anything for the local economy in real terms.

If Manchester City Council wanted to showcase itself it should think about investing it's money in health, local businesses, social care services, education and schools FIRST. At the very least it would show that the council was being run by intelligent competent people. I guess the next thing the council will push for is increased rates in public transport, privatization and housing benefit cuts to make up the squandered public money!

I like Alicia Keys but that's disgusting. I hate how money is wasted in the UK.

    Not at all.

What a waste of tax payers money.

Global profile......ridiculous! As you so rightly say while thousands are losing their jobs why waste money so needlessly?

Typical pompous statement from those who lord it over us on councils.
