This is how W.I. pays back to IPL. Hooper says that IPL is the biggest threat to cricket, maybe it is,pl read?
1) They don't have the money to pay to their star players.
2) Major infighting, Gayle kind of player was languishing for nearly 2 years in exile.
3) W.I.C.B. allowed a young 19 year old Sunil Naraine to play in the IPL, instead of taking on the traditional rivals Australia at home, in a Test series.
Gayle, Pollard, Bravo & to some extent Naraine have honed their skills, playing in various T-20 leagues around the world, after W.I.C.B. ditched them. These same players helped W.I. to win the T-20 W.C. & their celebrations showed how much they loved winning that.
For a former player like Hooper to exclaim that IPL is the biggest threat, maybe it is, as all the boards & their respective fans keep on saying that.
Then why was a player of Lara's caliber trying to get in IPL after years of retirement.
How come 9 international stars have ditched their home teams, to play for IPL teams in the Champions League.
Major conflict of interests, it seems. On one hand players are falling over each other to represent IPL teams and new T-20 leagues are coming up every 6 months but every Tom Dee & Harry gets up to criticize IPL, at the 1st given opportunity.
Is it a coincidence or like K.P. said, its jealousy on part of people from outside of IPL & it has become a fad to criticize IPL every time a good or bad thing happens to your team.
Trying to discuss, as we are aware that what IPL has done to the Indian team & how dollars are the only reason behind IPL attraction. Do you have something different to say, pl share your views.
Pl have your say..

Sour grapes from Hooper. If the players can stash away a couple of hundred thousand + for eight weeks work, good luck to them.
Their careers are short. Why shouldn't they maximize their earnings while they can?
The WICB can't pay these guys what they are worth. At least with IPL, BBL English league SL T20 etc young players can at least stay with cricket instead of going to the US on track scholarships. Where else but T20 can WICB turn to to ensure talent stays with the game?
Criticizing by Hooper is one thing, but what does he propose as an alternative?
As for the "destroying cricket" comment, test cricket has been popular for over a century. T20 is a great feeder for the long form game. Great way to blood young players.
Edit: @ Baji: Can I suggest that Y!A Cricket section doesn't really reflect the real world. People here attack IPL and BCCI to "payback" the trolls, rather than any deep seated convictions about what these organizations are really doing. Even TC's (from all sides, not just western countries) attack trolls with venom, even though it is obvious that the troll can't possibly be from their "alledged" country. A thinly veiled excuse to engage in racism and pass it off as a "response" to my mind. Another living example of this is your gratuitous reference to Ricky Ponting in your answer, which has no relevance to the question, but is made purely to stir up hate. Why do it? I just don't get it. Just move on and live and let live.

Playing the same old vinyl this is..
Hooper got reasons to say these things, we all know them and even your question contain some of them..
"How come 9 international stars have ditched their home teams, to play for IPL teams in the Champions League?? Major conflict of interests, it seems"
This is the biggest reason why some people outside India bash IPL..
Indians must be proud for this very reason and I have no problem with that..
But,, as Hooper said
"We want to have our best cricketers playing each and every time we take the park"
You can think as an Indian fan,, about a West Indian Premier League and some Indian players who dont get paid for playing International cricket..
"On one hand players are falling over each other to
represent IPL teams"
You are right.. Some players rather warm an IPL bench and earn money than playing for their national or domestic teams and many West Indies players are prime examples of it..
"new T-20 leagues are coming up every 6 months but every Tom Dee & Harry gets up to criticize IPL, at the 1st given opportunity"
On point again.. Im more against these handicapped SLPL and BPL.. Altho IPL is the father figure of them Indian Premier leage got nothing to do with them,, atleast intentionaly..
Yes.. IPL did help West Indies to win the world cup..
But paying homage and dcik riding mean two different things..

Completely agree with you. It seems Hooper the T20 WC win has gone over Hooper's head. How come he forget that it was the IPL that honed the skills of the Windies main players? Would Gayle be in the Windies team had he not played in the IPL? He was completely ditched by WICB and there was no chance of him returning into the national cricket team in near future. But IPL gave him his lifetime opportunity of showing what he was. Its not like he was not an attacking player earlier but IPL showcased his real talent in front of the whole world. Till then, Gayle was just another hard hitter of the ball. After his grand success in the IPL, he became one of the hottest properties in T20 leagues overnight, all over the world. No one was concerned about his exile from international cricket then. But after the IPL show, former Windies greats started lobbying for him against the Board. It looked like WICB noticed his talent for the first time. It was not Gayle but the WICB that approached towards a compromise, whoever the person behind the scene may be. That was Gayle's biggest victory and that was mainly due to IPL. Now that HE has won the cup for them, its ridiculous of Hooper to criticize IPL that made Christopher Gayle the Monster Gayle.
Everyone seems to enjoy criticizing BCCI and IPL these days for no specific reason. Agree with KP here. Its out of jealousy only, nothing else.
Edit:
Agree with Mick Laren.
Criticizing by Hooper is one thing, but what does he propose as an alternative?
He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help. This quote by Lincoln doesn't fit right with Hooper.

Alright, first of all, here's the thing. Every none Indian cricket board is not thrilled about IPL and that's quite understandable. Imagine that it was some other ckt board, not BCCI who formed a tournament like IPL. I am sure then BCCi would be the first Ckt board to criticize that premier league and say it destroys cricket. As much as I don't blame BCCI for creating a tournament like IPL and using it for the betterment of their cricket and the board, I do not blame other ckt boards or experts criticizing IPL. Both parties are justified on what they do.
Ok, let me come to talk about IPL benefiting none Indian players. IPL is more like a double edged sword for players from other countries who play there. For an example yes it helped WI players big time! It helped Gayle to reinvent himself. It helped many other Windy players like Bravo and Narine to hone their skills. But at the same time it disfavored Sri Lanka on Malinga's case. One would assume IPL as the the reason for Malinga to quit test cricket although it is still debatable. But it's obvious that playing in IPL did expose Malinga too much which resulted him being a less effective bowler especially against India which is well documented.
Coming back to what Hooper said, from West Indian point of view he should be right. But at the same time part of the blame should go with his ckt board for not looking after their players like you mentioned in your Q. More like SLC did to their players which provoked some Lankan players to give their priority to play in IPL.
You asked...
"Then why was a player of Lara's caliber trying to get in IPL after years of retirement."
"How come 9 international stars have ditched their home teams, to play for IPL teams in the Champions League."
The answer is real simple. They all did for the large pay check they receive.
You also said
"Major conflict of interests, it seems. On one hand players are falling over each other to represent IPL teams and new T-20 leagues are coming up every 6 months but every Tom Dee & Harry gets up to criticize IPL, at the 1st given opportunity."
Once again the same reason. Other T-20 leagues don't offer even half amount of money offers by IPL. So IPL stands tall above all other leagues and it has the most effect on world cricket. No other league is even close to that.
I am not agreeing that IPL should be criticized every time a good or bad thing happens to your team. It is not justified. But unfortunately on some issues somehow IPL is involved. IPL had a huge effect on world's cricket (both in good and bad ways) so it is always eligible to both praise and criticism.

I am not very much expert to express my views and expert comments in cricket but here just will share my word that as I observed that IPL is more than cricket I am not viewing on hoopere comments prospective but its purely my views on it so I was saying that IPL not only cricket now its like an entertainment because of the keen involvement of bollywood star it make a show where you enjoy a entertainment show prove is that people who have no interest in circket they also take interest in IPL and second reason is obviously money playing major role to make famous IPL every one want to gain benefits so in short that you cant say that IPL not playing very good role to improve cricket.

Players like Hooper and ponting knows that they can't get a chance to play in the most richest league of world Cricket. That's why, All these people have their own style of targeting Indian premiere league.
IPL is the main reason for the growing charm of West Indians Cricket.
EDIT -- Some users from certain nation always over-react when they hear BCCI or IPL's name. They try to malign IPL/BCCI name with corruption. Can you tell me a single place where there is no corruption? Mit Romney(the US contestant against President Obama) has also have money stashed away in his Swiss bank accounts.

IPL has changed the very character and face of cricket....... depending on what your own perspective is, one can call it a threat/destroyer or a boon/savior of the game..... the more important point to note is that it has such potency as can leave none neutral!!
