Not even a little bit. Personal freedom was the cornerstone of what made the U.S.A. the greatest country in the world. Now, have people been screwed by the system? Sometimes. Edison stole patents from Tesla and tried to badmouth Westinghouse and Tesla's alternating current designs. But it didn't work, and now our country uses it exclusively to power our homes. More often, men like Rockefeller and Carnegie built both industrial titans and hospitals, libraries, colleges, and charitable institutions. Meanwhile, socialism has been tried for two centuries on small and large scales, and every time it runs into the same problem. Individual safety, security, and personality are ingrained in all of us. We must live, and we must be able to maintain a certain lifestyle for ourselves and our family. Those needs are ingrained in us at a viseral level. But we also have to be able to express ourselves, or those other things don't matter. Socialism might take on the first problem, but it ultimately fails because the other values take over, impeding the ability of the collective to meet even that first need.

It depends what you mean by unrestrained, maybe if you give an example. It's obvious that many people vote on the person that will help them rather than what would be best for the country or for most. But people in individualistic societies are actually shown to be happier and feel like they have greater control over their lives and how their actions directly affect the outcome of a situation.
