How is life in Chicago? I will visit soon....?

...and would like to ask how the city is like. I have spent the last 9 years living in NYC and am tired of it (expensive, dirty, lots of people with bad attitudes). I am looking to move to a place with a stable economy. I just graduated with a degree in accounting. Is it hard finding a job there? Is it dangerous? How are the people (friendly, rude, etc.). Please advise. I will visit in a month.

Update:

Thanks Richard that was very helpful. I would also like to ask you and anyone else who answers this are Chicago winters as bad as they say they are? I love winter and snow but not too snowy. NYC I think was not too snowy at all there were winters where we got little to no snow. Also how is the nitelife there and culture? Theaters? Thanks a million!

Update 2:

Also is it true that sale tax in Illinois is like 11%???? Thanks!

Update 3:

Thank u tichur! You were very helpful! I hope I like Chicago. If I do I could be there as early as December. We'll see.

Chgo is a small NYC...large neighborhoods, transportation hub, big business, tall skyline, cultural center, and next to large body of water (we drink Lake Michigan). Both have excellent public transportation using light rail, commuter rail, buses, shuttle vans, taxis, and water taxis. Both have flts coming and leaving from more than one airport.

Chgo is the center of the grain market and stock exchanges. All kinds of businesses small to world wide call Chgo. home. All require lawyers, accountants, executives, insurance agents and brokers, secretaries, clerks and runners, janitors, security guards...many jobs.

Chgo is THE BIG CITY. Anything can happen. Like NYC keep an eye open for a surprise, ride on publc transportation at busy hours, walk in a group, etc. People are less rude but can get whacko drunk or get a chip on their shoulder easily or take an attitude. Like all big cities there is low life. Stay out of dangerous neighborhoods at night.

Take advantage of an extensive and rather cheap way to travel withinn the city and suburbs...CTA buses and trains have routes throughout the city and near by suburbs. PACE buses are routed in the suburbs and to CTA terminals for easy transfers. METRA trains have a few city stops and most others in surrounding suburbs and out to farm country.

Get your travel routes here...copy and save:

Last Winter was the "Weird Winter" with about 11" snow and several above freezing temps. There was a 9" snowfall/storm. That however is not normal. Chicago normally gets windy bursts off the prairies to the west bringing snow and wind but the worst storms come from the NE...like NYC. The open air with no restrictions rush over the lake picking up moisture and then dumping rain or heavy snow. There are normally 2 blizzard-like conditions storms...high winds + falling snow. Streets are kept pretty safe for driving and walking but we'll see as this will possibly the first such season for the new mayor.

Nightlife is at full speed in and around Rush St, River North, South Loop, West Loop, Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, Wrigleyville and Old Town + more.

November weather is much like NYC average high - 49F, average low - 35F. Snow rain or mixture of both is possible after mid-month. Average precipitation 3.42 ".

Culture is much the same as NYC...multi culture. Mexicans, Polish, Italian, Puerto Rican, Native Americans, Russian, Arabs, Indians, Koreans, Moraccans, Bulgarians, Sicilians, Serbs, Greeks, Scots, a few French, Gautemalan, Irish, Australian, etc people live here. Many have vibrant neighborhoods, restaurants, shops and churches. Chgo had more than 400 neighborhood festivals:

There are over 100 places to go for theater...small venues to the full, giant size Auditorium Theater. Some shows are pre-Broadway while now there's a post Broadway play. Many concerts at these venues and others. Music is not as big as in the past but there are stilll jazz, blues, western and rock places plus ethnic music places if you want Mariachi, Tango, Merengue, disco, Line dancing + more.

Taxes are in outer space. That plus high fuel costs make shopping in the suburbs or out of state a reality for many.

Come in mid-November or December,,,whenever you want. Just bring money.

Chicago has murders and more murders..all they know is to take away gun rights for citizens and reward gang bangers with youth centers and marches wearing T shirts...If you have not moved ...don't pick Chicago

    1. Chicago is a big city, and it has good and bad neighborhoods.

    2. The city is less expensive than NYC, but it is more expensive than most medium-sized cities.

    3. Public parts of Chicago are very clean and well-maintained. Lousy neighborhoods are full of irresponsible people who make slums out of the lack of self-respect.

    4. NYC is one of the rudest places on earth. Chicago is comparatively civil.

    5. The job market is still tough here, but there are jobs for recent accounting graduates.

    6. Much of the South and West sides are not particularly safe, and there are some neighborhoods on the northeast corner of the city that are sketchy. The rest of the city (and most suburbs) is OK.

Young adults prefer to live in Lakeview and areas surrounding it. It is an tremendously congested nearby with tons of bars, night time life, and so on. That enchantment to your demographic. The local is on the whole trustworthy, numerous, and not very a long way from downtown. That you could get a clean apartment for below $a thousand/month, plus utilities. Put out of your mind a vehicle. The streets are packed, and there is not any customer parking on hand in front of most stores. Off-avenue parking could also be on hand for some residences, however it'll be high priced. Take public transportation instead. You will want to break out the neighborhood as you mature and/or get married. The noise, congestion, and transient nature of the subject is difficult for adults to tolerate.

I like Chicago because I was born and raised there and we got a lot to do here and our city is big and a tourist attraction. plus we have one of the best downtown's ever. The crime is bad the education is ok depending on where you live the hospitals are great and the housing authority here sucks. The cultural diversity is ok we got people from all walks of life here also, but they all live on the Northside of the city especially in Rogers Park.

Chicago helps with getting an education but a job and housing is hard to come by here cause we got so many people here and a lot of more to come. The housing authority still got there wait list for section 8 and public housing closed in 2012 but Minnesota still help out with public housing. Hopefully Chicago open up as well we got a lot of new mixed income housing popping up everywhere that can't nobody afford not to mention the gentrification that's going on here. Most of the ares that's becoming integrated is Rogers Park, Humboldt Park, Hyde Park, Uptown, Lincoln Park and Edgewater.

Chicago is culturally diverse but very segregated at the Moment. They trying there best to gentrify the place.

I like Minneapolis because of the education system it's a woman and kid state they got tons of government services and resources. I also like the cultural diversity and the landscapes. The Mall of America in Bloomington, MN is too cool and so is Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. The people are friendly and they got so many people there from all over the world like Whites, Blacks, Hmongs, Native Americans, Indians, people from the caribbean and a whole lot of Somalians. Downtown Minneapolis also have skyline which I love and is very beautiful because in the winter time you can go outside and walk through the skyline your outside but yet inside as well it is so cool and very little crime.

Minneapolis help you with everything thing from getting into a shelter and getting housing to getting an education and a job and cheaper cost of living than chicago.

Chicago got a mass transit system which is just about the only thing they got on Minneapolis.

Chicago got buses, pace, taxi, metra train and L line trains.

Minneapolis got buses, one train that takes you from downtown Minnespolis to the Mall Of America and tons of cabs.
