Mexican-American Sterotypes?
Can you tell me as a Mexican-American what types of stereotype's do you find the most frustrating to deal with on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis? I am writing a thesis and I would like some insight. I only would like people of mexican descent to answer. Thank you

1) That we're "lazy." Reality: We're working our butts off every day. But those who need to feel "superior" like to call us "lazy" because it makes them feel better about themselves. Remember the drawing or ceramic knik-knak of the sleepy mexicano with a large sombrero sleeping under a cactus? That sums up the "lazy Mexican" stereotype. 2) "Mexicans are all thieves." This we hear in a country & from a culture (USA) whose leaders have largely been made up of the criminal class (the Reagan administration to name only one example). Ironic, no? 3) "Mexicans are always drunk." Some of us are. But no more than you find in the USA white culture. 4) "Mexicans eat nothing but tacos, tamales, and burritos." That's quite stupid. I eat tamales & burritos, si, but many other things also. 5) "All Mexicans are violent and they all carry knives & guns." No, those are the "pandilleros" (gang members), and they're not a good representation of what Mexicano culture is about. 6) "Mexicans are a primitive, superstitious, medieval culture." (I saw this recently on the 'Net or in the paper). My God, what idiots! Take a look at the White USA culture & their idiocies then come back & tell me how superstitious, primitive, and "medieval" we Mexicanos are! What irony!! 7) And of course the white culture thinks that Mexicans are "sneaky." That's an old one. It's all about people trying to feel better about themselves by ridiculing and condemning other people ...

Oh meu deus. I'm sorry but I think Mexicans are one are one of the most nationality groups that often get stereotyped. I don't know why, I know a lot of nice, easy-going Mexicans. Anyway supposedly they eat tortillas with every food and everyday, they are dark-skinned, which is not true because i'm white and some are lighter than me. Also that most of them are illegal, short, they're uneducated, smell ball, poor, when speaking English they pronounce the "v" as "b" as well with "y" they pronounce it as "j". One that I think it's mostly true (well at least for the ones who are Mex-American) is that they speak Spanglish.

All Mexican-Americans support illegal immigration, they love beer and carnesada, most are in the u.s illegally etc... But the one I can't stand is that people think that every mexican-american speaks spanish.

The stereotypes I know of are Taco/burritos. And I always hear jokes about them illegally crossing the boarder...

Soy un gringo, pero vivo en un ciudad tres millas norte de Tijuana. En areas blancas, muchos gringos a veces preguntan y molestan clientes mexicanos en el mercado porque los creen que todos los mexicanos trabajan alla.
