Durian didn't smell bad at all?

So I just ate my first durian fruit. I was expecting the legendary death smell I've heard so much about, but there was none of that. It had a very mild ripe fruit smell, unique but somewhat like mango and papaya. I bought it frozen from the local asian mart. Regarding ripeness, the fruit part surrounding the seeds was very custardy and not firm, from all I've read that would mean it was not too terribly green.

For anyone wondering, the taste was quite interesting... banana, onion, mango, papaya... all mixed together, not the most appetizing texture but I found the taste was good.

So do some durian just not smell bad? I feel like I was cheated!

I know. Durian is delicious. During durian seasons people chartered durian tours to durian plantation to savour those amazing fruits. I guess like everything first time, it seems weird, smell etc like when you first tasted cheese. After you acquired it, you will learn to appreciate it more. Good for you.....don;t eat durian too much, its very heaty for your body temperature. To offset the heatiness, eat mangosteen or drink coconut water. During durian seasons you will be able to find mangosteen and rambutan (hairy fruit) both of these fruits you should try too.

Durian doesn't smell bad but it's smell is just different somehow.

I dunno. You may be lacking the ability to smell it. Taste buds and smell are really complex and dependent on genetics. Try convincing people who can't stand anise/black liquorice that it doesn't smell like vomit or that cilantro doesn't taste like soap.

Source(s): eta: I was searching to see if it was genetic and there definitely is a disparity-- one group smells it like rotting meat or feet, and to everybody else it smells sweet.
