T Mobile 4G: Does wifi use data?

I have a limited data plan with T Mobile (I think 2GB a month) on my galaxy S 4g.. I've heard that connecting to wifi will use the wifi and save data usage. I was told that's not true by my mom. Can someone clarify this please? Thanks!

Update:

@ NB: Okay, thanks for the quick response. And I know about the phone call minutes. I'm limited to minutes, but I use a small fraction of my plan's allowance.

@Corvato: Thanks for the reply. And I know about the 4G slowing down after my set data limit. I just wanted to make sure wifi conserved my data, so I can stream music & browse and etc. without being conservative.

No, browsing the internet over WiFi does not use up data on your plan.

Making phone calls count towards your minutes though, no matter the WiFi network.

I can confirm that using WiFi uses your Data Plan. I have tested this by turning off Mobile Data and using my phone on WiFi only. The next day I check my data usage and it sure enough eats up my data usage based on my WiFi activity. So The only way to not use it is unlimited Data Plan, because it doesn't matter how much data you download, meaning the WiFi data you download still counts towards your unlimited data but since you have unlimited it doesn't matter. If you have any other data plan such as 500mb or any other limited then your wifi activity will eat up your Data Plan very fast if you browse lot of data through your phone regardless of WiFi or not.

No using WiFi is separate from your Data plan since your using your own internet connection and not the cellular provider's network (which is 3G)

To be sure you won't be using any Data turn off network connection

    1) go to settings

    2) Wireless & Networks

    3)Mobile Networks

    4) Uncheck Data Enabled

It does use data. I'm on WiFi the majority of the time and still manage to hit my data limit well before the end of my billing period. The way I avoid this is put it on airplane mode, turn on WiFi calling, and use my WiFi that way.

no, when using WiFi it doesn't use data

and T-Mobile USA, all their data plans are actually unlimited, but after a certain amount (likely 2gb in your case) you performance will be slowed down.

THAT'S NOT TRUE. I JUST SPOKE WITH A T MOBILE REPRESENTATIVE AND HE TOLD ME WHEN YOU USE WIFI FOR INTERNET , YOU ARE CONSUMING YOUR DATA BECAUSE THE SYSTEM DOESN'T RECOGNIZE WHEN YOU ARE CONNECTED TO YOUR ROUTER . SO , BE CAREFUL BECAUSE I BELIEVED THE OPOSITE BUT APPARENTLY THEY ARE TAKING ADVANCE OF THIS TO SELL YOU A $10 DOLLARS ADDITIONAL DATA PLAN BUT THEY NEVER WILL TELL YOU UNTIL YOU ASK THEM .

This is a quote directly from the link support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-19788:

"Connect to Wi-Fi when you can. Data used over Wi-Fi doesn't count against your high-speed data plan."

I hope that answers the question. Use W-Fi whenever you can, and save data !
