"Panic hedge"? What's this tree actually called? (Hawaiian)?
I grew up in Hawaii, and the property I lived on was surrounded by a type of tree that my dad called "panic hedge"... and I started wondering what this tree/bush/hedge was, more recently. I'm not in Hawaii anymore so I can't pick a leaf to google it myself and try and figure it out, and 'panic hedge' turns up nothing relevant.
So... it was a tall thin sort of tree. 15 or 20 feet, I think. it generally went UP, rather then out.. the leaves were wide, and had several 'points' along the edge, kind of like a holly leaf, but, I think, but more 'pointign towards the tip of the leaf'... they were flat leaves... The termites loved the stuff :p Um, the leaves were enough to offer 'privacy fencing between us and the neighboring houses. they had a very clear scent that I don't think I can describe... they were sharp enough that they'd scratch a little, but never drawing blood or damaging or anything, It wans't enough to stop me from tromping through them as a kid. :)
I WANT to say that the edges of the leaf were whiteish while the red of the leave was green, with a grayish bark... but I don't really know.
Any ideas?
Oh, the bark was pale and pretty smooth.. .and i remember it came off in big chunks, I think.. I used to break branches off and 'skin' them to make pale wooded swords, and poles and spears and other kid stuff.
Hmm.. It's not Birch, though the leaves look similar. Hmm.. The tree was generally tall and narrow, with branches generally pointing upward. I"m sure there was a central trunk, but I don't remmeber seeing it much because of all the leaves around it. there were leaves ALL OVER the tree's branches, from top to bottom. some of the long, straight branches were many feet long and thin enough that a little girl could snap them off easily enough. And they generally went straight up into the air. ...Maybe I should draw a picture? Also, again, this was in Hawaii, so, subtropical climate.
