To "alone" - There's a very slim chance you'll ever read this. I hope you do. I can't reply to the message you sent me, but I wish you could. I'm glad I could make a difference for you. I'm glad I clicked on your question.. I didn't even plan on being on Y!answers the other day... I ended up there my accident. It was a wonderful accident and I am so glad that you got an answer you needed. I believe that sometimes the universe places us exactly where we need to be, when we need to be there and I think that was the case here... I am so grateful for that. I try to help where I can, when I can, and it's such a gift to know that, yes! I helped! And I thank you for that. I pray that you find yourself, next year, in a much better place, spiritually, and emotionally then you are in now. Keep in touch. For better or worse. Or don't. that's okay too. Sometimes, we just need to reach out as we pass each other in the river of life, then continue sailing onward.

  • "Panic hedge"? What's this tree actually called? (Hawaiian)?

I grew up in Hawaii, and the property I lived on was surrounded by a type of tree that my dad called "panic hedge"... and I started wondering what this tree/bush/hedge was, more recently. I'm not in Hawaii anymore so I can't pick a leaf to google it myself and try and figure it out, and 'panic hedge' turns up nothing relevant.

So... it was a tall thin sort of tree. 15 or 20 feet, I think. it generally went UP, rather then out.. the leaves were wide, and had several 'points' along the edge, kind of like a holly leaf, but, I think, but more 'pointign towards the tip of the leaf'... they were flat leaves... The termites loved the stuff :p Um, the leaves were enough to offer 'privacy fencing between us and the neighboring houses. they had a very clear scent that I don't think I can describe... they were sharp enough that they'd scratch a little, but never drawing blood or damaging or anything, It wans't enough to stop me from tromping through them as a kid. :)

I WANT to say that the edges of the leaf were whiteish while the red of the leave was green, with a grayish bark... but I don't really know.

    Any ideas?

  • Looking for a Brosix Alternative?

I really like brosix as an instant messenger, however, the recent updates have destroyed a lot of the functionality I enjoyed from the program and made things more difficult. The program now crashes on me frequently and i'm Not Happy with it any more... but I would like an instant messenger that is similar to it for my day to day needs.

    Features I need/want:

    * File sending that actually freakin' works.

    * easy conference chatting that works

    * Screensharing

    * History

    * Custom skins (white BGs hurt my eyes :( )

    * Custom emoticons

    * No text limit (yahoo only allows 800 letters to be sent in a single message)

Anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm willing to trek off the beaten path... I don't like aim or yahoo or MSN or ICQ. I just want a IM for me and my small circle of friends -- if no one else uses it, that's okay.

  • Links with % cause program crashes--why?

To note, this does not happen in any webbrowser! Only other programs.

Now the problem -- Every time I click on a URL with a % sign in it, that program will crash. Other URLs work fine and pull up Chrome properly, but a % sign will cause the program to instantly lock up.

This happens in: Skype, Brosix, and Trillian and possible one or two others I'm not remembering.

So... what gives? What would cause this and why? Will reformating my computer fix the issue?

To note, I'm running windows 7 and my main webbrowser is Chrome.

  • Quick Japanese translation please? (hiragana)?

Hi :) I'm trying to translate a very simple something for a friend... My Japanese is extremely rusty... but so far between my memories and google, I've been able to figure most of what she asked my to translate out...

However, I finally got stumped. :( This one last line is all that's keeping me from hitting 'send' and it's really frustrating me.

I'm pretty sure I understand most of the sentence, but one of the words is eluding my efforts to translate....

Here it is, written in the exact way it's written on this manga page:

    あんたはいいよ

    のってるだけ

    だもん!!!

(the last two lines were one character complaining about it being hot, and the other telling him to, basically, deal with it and stop complaining. This is the first character's return line.)

    So.... any help? :)

    thanks!

  • 'Pern' Question, concerning dragon telepathy.?

I've been reading Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider's of Pern books, again... So far I've reread Dragonflight, Dragonquest, Dragonsong, and Dragonsinger.

There are a few instances in Dragonquest, Dragonsong, and possibly others where people who have not impressed a dragon have heard dragons speak. I particularly recall the Masterharper being surprised in the later part of Dragonquest (I think).. and there were a few other instances as well.

Of course, F'nor can hear Canth, and so forth, and Lessa could hear all dragons, but there was no reason for the Masterharper to hear anydragon, and the other instance was unusual as well.

Is this ever explained? I'm doing some research and while I've all intentions of reading everything, this mystery is one I'd like to figure out sooner rather then later. :)

Also, if you could mention which book answers this question, that'd be awesome, I'll move it to the top of the pile. :D

Thanks! (off to 'the White Dragon')

  • What's up with this cat's belly?

Okay. So I've been getting the freeroaming and feral cats in my area fixed one by one... One of them, I call her White Toast, was spayed on wednesday. She wasn't pregnant (though it's possible she was nursing.. though it didn't really look like it)... I went to let her go tonight... as she was sounding quite desperate and pathetic, mewing away in her carrier in my bathroom....

Now, Toast is actually pretty friendly... So she stepped lazily out of the carrier and started eating the food I set down for her... I was aiming the camera at her to snap a few shots (for my records) when I noticed that her belly looked.... strange. I took a chance and reached under her and her skin felt really warm.. and her teats were very firm. she grumbled a bit and shuffled away, but I reached for her and pulled her to stand on her hind legs a moment while I looked... then I brought her inside to show my husband..

Her teats were looking kinda... lumpily swollen.. a bit pinkish and irritated, perhaps... though I guess it might be natural for her.

It's in the wee hours of saturday morning and around here, the only vets open on saturday deal in cows and horses. :/ So, I gently recaught her, and Am going to keep her until monday when I'll try to take her back to the place that spayed her...

but until then.. anyone have any thoughts about this?

Again, this is a 4 or 5 year old cat, who may have recently had kittens (or may not have... her 'sister' who she had kittens with a few months ago was pregnant when I had her spayed a week and a half ago)... she's a free roaming cat with no owner... just me. Her teats are warm, kinda swollen, and lumpy looking (hard to describe)... The incision seemed fine, though, when I had her on her back in my arms. also, she has pretty good appetite, and started making biscuits against my arm when I let her flip back over in my arms when I was talking to my husband. (some feral, huh? ) But she seems in good spirits, anyway, outside of the whole 'stuck in a carrier' thing.

  • Kitten food in bulk/homemade catfood/RAW?

    Hello!

I am owned by 4 cats.

One of them is about a year and a half old, the other three are her kittens (she came to us pregnant, and everyone is fixed/spayed now). the kittens are about 6 months old now.

I want to give my cats the absolute best I can, but unfortunately, at this moment, money is REALLY tight... But I want to try to give them kitten food until theyr'e about a year old--as everyone recommends..

the thing is, even the cheap walmart brand of kitten food is expensive (about $1/pound).. and or walmart doesn't sell kitten food in bags larger then 6 pounds.

I've done some looking, and every other kitten food manufacturer I've found seems similarly locked into small bag sizes (I think the biggest I found was a 15 lbs bag that cost about 3$ a pound!)

does anyone know of any manufacturer that sells kitten food in large--and cheaper--quantities? My local walmart is also very bad about keeping shelves stocked--I only find their brand of cat food (which is horrible, I know) every 2 or 3 trips...

Alternatively, I wonder if making my own catfood might be cheaper, in the end, as well as healthier. does anyone have any information on this?

I'd feed my babies a raw diet if I could (i'm not really squeamish), but I just don't think it'll pan out as any cheaper.

thank you for any information, and links you can offer me!

  • What other games have a cooperative mode like Halo?

My husband recently convinced me to sit down and play Halo with him. Now, I don't hold a candle to his skill, but... we've been enjoying it, and it's been a lot of fun to have something that we can do together.

We tried the 'death match' mutiplayer mode and both agreed that I'm not match for him, and that it wasn't any fun. ...

so... While we have Halo and halo 2 to play through, what after?

I'm looking for some other video games that have a cooperative play mode... something where we can work together as a team...

I'd prefer a game where we're both playing at the same time--as opposed to a game where we have to take turns... but a turn-taking game would be okay.

A game where our only option is to compete against each other is pretty well out.

    So... any suggestions?

We have a ps2, and an xbox, and a pair of new PC's. So, preferably, for those gaming systems.

    Thanks!

  • Cedar chips and cat litter?

    Hi!

I've seen people use cedar chips for bedding for outdoor dogs, and the local stray cats use the discarded bedding for their litter box.

My husband said the cedar chips would make poor litter for our indoor cats, though, because it irritates their sinuses, or some such.

While I love my husband, I wonder if his words are true or not.

Anyone know anything about this one way or another?

  • Wet automatic feeders?

So, My mother in law has a dog.

she's kept outdoors in a pen, and has a supply of dry food at all hours... but my mother insists on feeding her wet food, also, and doesn't like being even a few minutes late in feeding her. So, when she's running late coming home, she calls my very stressed and overworked husband and asks him to feed the dog.

This is a point of great aggrivation for him, for a wide variety of valid reasons, so I'd like to defuse the situation somehow.

I plan on trying to interject myself and tell his mother to call me instead, but in the event that that doesnt' work out, I'm looking for a more mechanical solution.

I know that they make 7 and 8 day feeders, that'll open at a certain time each day, etc, and I know hat they often come with coolpacks that'll keep food fresh for 8 -12 hours...

8-12 hours will work fine, but we only need to have one timer'd meal... is there anything like that that we can buy for relatively cheap?

    Any other ideas? thanks.

  • How to convince momcat that her kittens are safe after moving them?

4 weeks ago my cat had kittens under our bed about 4 weeks ago.

She has been outside a few days before we adopted her, and put on a lot of weight. We took her to the vet about a month later and he said she wasn't pregnant. :P D'oh.

We let her stay there for a few days, then got a towel under the kittens, and a day or two later, moved them to a box a few feet away.

Last night (4 weeks), she decided that they needed more room to explore, and lifted them out and to the floor next to the box.

Woke up to a swarm of kittens crawling around on the floor underfoot.

So, we decided we needed to move them into our spare bedroom. Cleaned everything up, set up the essentials, moved the kittens in with their box.

Set up a gate so momcat can come and go as she wishes, but she keeps trying to take the kittens out with her. :/

How can we help to convince momcat that her kittens are in a good, safe place?

It's a lot safer in there then it is in our bedroom with us groggy, clumsy humans..
