how to intepret simple linear regression when R-square is very low?

so the case is, the linear regression is significant, however the r-square value is only about 0.05.

Should I even consider the regression useful?

    The previous contributor, Mojomaj, is correct.

    The 'R' value is a 'measurement', or indication of the accuracy or reliability of the data, reference (in this case) a linear regression equation. The higher the R value (i.e. the closer to 1 it gets) the more accurate and therefore more reliable the expression. Here we have an R-squared value of 0.05, this is very low, therefore I would suggest the answer is NO, the regression is of little use.

    No. The larger the r-square the closer the data is to a straight line.
