Pain in left inguinal region?

I am a twenty year old girl. I have a doctor's appointment in two days, but I was wondering what this pain could be. It is beside (on the medial side of) my left hip bone, and at a level a little above it. I've had this pain for about a month now. It used to hurt earlier than that, but only while doing yoga and sometimes while pooping. Now, the pain is almost always there. It is mild, and I've been constipated for about a week now. I recently ended my iron treatment for microcytic hypochromic anemia, and strangely it did not give me constipation at all; in fact I had to use the toilet at least twice a day when I was taking iron. Could it be a hernia? There's no visible mass there yet. There's no family history of irritable bowel syndrome, if that's what these symptoms might be due to. I am kinda impatient and want to have a clue of what it might be before I go to the doctor. Any ideas? Thanks. :)

My first thought is that you probably have an inguinal hernia. The lack of a visible mass simply indicates that it has not become incarcerated or strangulated. The fact that you are constipated suggests that you may have been straining more recently to pass a bowel movement. If so, straining can cause the increased pain that you feel in the groin area.

Let me suggest that when you get out of the bath or shower, that you spread your legs ever so slightly and use your middle and index fingers together to press upward in the groin to the left of your vulva and just ahead of the pubic bone. While pressing upward, cough and see if you feel tissue trying to protrude against your finger tips. If yes, it is a good indication that you are in the early stages of an inguinal hernia.

I'd suggest you try using a warm tap water enema to relieve the constipation and thus any straining.

Best of luck to you. I've experienced both constipation and inguinal hernias. Hope this helps.

EDIT: I just read your posting "About me". I also want to wish you luck in being accepted into medical school. That will give you the opportunity to treat inguinal hernias and constipation instead of having them. LOL Good luck!
