Can you get fired for not getting a flu shot, even if you're allergic to the ingredients?
I don't know what section this would be under but....
I work at a hospital, and I have numerous allergies. I cannot get the flu shot because certain ingredients in it can kill me. It was never mandatory which worked well for me. But now the hospital is changing their rules, and saying every hospital employee, no matter what their position, has to get a flu shot. I asked them if I applied as well with my allergies, and they said yes. They told me if I do not get a flu shot, I will be terminated. Are they legally allowed to do this?
I work in a separate department, away from patients.
I have written documentation about all of my allergies, and everyone in my department knows of them. I did voluntarily get the flu shot last year (not knowing the ingredients, which was my mistake), and it affected me instantly. It caused me to go into anaphylaxis, and I had to get 2 shots of epinephrine. I'd rather not have to go through the same thing again.

Hmmm, I wouldn't think any company would have the right to force their employees to do something like have a flu shot...even a hospital. But, hospitals are pretty serious places, perhaps they have special rules of law to help protect their patients. I wish I could help you more; I'd recommend speaking with your union rep or finding a lawyer who can answer this question for you.
BTW, I thought there were special flu shots these days for people with allergies?

It is a company policy. Working there you could risk infecting someone else(which even with the flu shot you could end up doing) who DOES work near the patients. On top of that unless you work in an area that is in a separate building there is still the risk of you coming across the patients.

Yes, they can institute this policy, and have it cover every employee. If you can't meet the requirement, then they can legally fire you for not meeting it.
The problem is that many, many people proclaim that they are "allergic" to things that they just don't like. So when someone does have a real allergy, people tend to think that they just don't like something. I'm not saying that you are making up this allergy...but there are alternative shots, you know.

Yes, they can. Since you have no protection from being fired at will, you can be fired for not complying with ANY company policy.

No they can not do that as long as u have documentation that ur allergic to the ingredients. If they do, get legal help and take it from there.

They cannot force you to have a flu shot. You could charge them with attempted murder, in that case.
