For those of you who left home at 18?

A question for those who left home and 18 and moved away (another state, country) from family and friends (excluding college), or those who moved away later on in life without any support.

What gave you the courage to make such a move? How did deal with having to support yourself? Did you ever not have enough money? How did it turn out for you?

I decided to go to Australia when I was 18 and I stayed for two years. Then New Zealand for two. And then Italy for a year.

Nothing to do with courage for me. I just wanted to have some fun. I had various jobs but I never earned much money. It's kind of fun having to get by on very little money. I've never had any trouble making new friends so that was a help, obviously.
