Advice on visiting Imperial Sand Dunes (algodon)?

I live in an east valley phoenix suburb. I have some visitors coming, 2 adults 1 child, from the far northeast. I am seeking advice on how to plan SOME time of experience (seeing, driving, riding, touching, walking) these dunes, with the following criteria:

1. i'm willing to pay a little to rent something to ride around on them. how/where do I do this?

2. i have no special skill, licenses, memberships in the park, etc., but I am an able bodied man able to drive a 3 or 4 wheeler, etc.

3. a total of 4 adults and 3 kids would be involved, but i'm open to ideas that involves just the adults or just the kids.

I've driven past those many times while driving to san diego and know they're just a couple hours away from phoenix. They look so awesome. So what kind of fun can be had on a thursday or friday of next week by a few visitors? anything that's actually worth a 2 hr drive from phoenix? ideas, thanks.

    Hello,

There is a rental company located in Yuma Az about 20 min. away from the first dunes. (Buttercup Sand Dunes). Buttercup is heavily patrolled by the BLM and Border Patrol since the border is at that side of the Sand Dunes. Grey's Well is the next set of dunes it is bigger than Buttercup more dunes to ride more places to park.

You do have to have a ATV training if you ride and ATV. There are several areas you can get a certification for riding ATV.http://www.atvsafety.org/ If you choose to ride a side by side all you need is a valid driver's license. Side by sides are two and 4 seat vehicles that you can drive the same way you drive a car. You do need to purchase a permit to go to the sand dunes you can purchase that online on imperialsandunes.net

The best time to go is during the week there is less people and less action. It is totally worth the trip
