  • Are clothing barcodes going to be the same on branded items, from place to place?

My question is, to what extent can BARCODES, if scanned and interpreted (by barcode font, I assume) be expected to return the SAME INFORMATION (in whole or in part), from store to store?

    Let's say I get a barcode from a pair of Levi's #51, size 40 jeans, at Macy's.

Would a pair of Levi's #51, size 40 jeans, at Dillars or Kohls be the same barcode from the manufacturer? Or would it be the same in part?

(and no, I'm not trying to start some sophisticated tag swapping criminal gang, I'm trying to develop a small local app for price sharing among consumers and couponing type stuff).

  • Good bumper sticker for "your lane ended, MERGE" type of idiots?

I live in a large metro area, & we have a lot of situations (freeway access roads especially), where there is a stop every mile. About a full 1/3 of a mile prior to that stop, huge "lane ends, merge left" signs appear.

Of course, (being in AZ - some of the dumbest drivers in the NATION) - roughly 25% of the drivers in the right lane pretend not to see the signs, and then when their lane is ending, ignore the fact that it is their responsibility to merge and yield to the traffic whose lane is continuing. Usually women, but it certain crosses genders sometimes.

Funny, cuz when 2 cars are side by side, and the car on the right has the legal responsibility to yield & merge, that person has TWO full options: 1) speed up. 2) slow down. But, strangely, some people will pretend that the horrid person is the one whose lane continued. (Even though that is a 100% backwards application of the concept of yielding and responsibility).

It's not just a once in a while thing. It's every day. Hard to believe there are people who will just cruise on through a "it's 100% my responsibility to slow down or speed up to merge" situation, and expect the person who's responsibility it is NOT, to do all of the thinking & braking FOR them. (!!??)

Have you seen any good bumper stickers that might help that person simmer down once they are behind you? Like, "What part of YOUR lane ends, merge left, don't you understand?"

If not, what would be a good saying for a customizable sticker.

  • Advice on video rental services?

This is coming from a guy who really valued and enjoyed the old days of walking into a Blockbuster where you could really LOOK at the cases and get a sense of what you were renting....

Anyway, I have a good internet connection, and a Roku box, so I understand the possibilities there.

I've already read internet articles (like the CNET one) about "where to rent / stream videos, post-blockbuster" type of theme. None of that is new to me, but the problem is that along with the description of the various options (Amazon prime, Vudu, Netflix etc), comes no mention at all about the SELECTION. That's what I need help evaluating.

I DO NOT WANT THE FOLLOWING:

    1) watching movies on a phone, laptop, or anything other than my TV / Roku-accessible.

    2) to sign up for any rental service that does not have a FULL SELECTION - in other words, like Blockbuster always had. ALL NEW RELEASES TO DVD, PERIOD.

The reason I haven't done Amazon Prime's yearly thing is, what if the selection is crap, like Netflix? I don't just need another Redbox, I want to know what ONE PLACE can I sign up for that has ALL NEW RELEASE, and hopefully a monthly subscription type of fee where I can get a little more for my money.

NOT JUST service that pick and choose and have random, totally unpredictable selections that represent maybe 10% of the new releases - like Netflix and Redbox and, I think, Amazon Prime.

I'm leaning towards Vudu, but does anyone coming from a similar perspective have advice?

  • What to consider when buying a used iPhone for a friend in Mexico?

A friend of mine in Mexico is in need of some help in replacing an iphone (cheaper here used, than there used).

I have nothing to do with Apple products (and never will), so I am unsure what to consider.

The recipient of the phone isn't picky - they just want an iPhone4 with 16 GB. I can figure out how to make a reasonably solid purchase on Amazon, etc., but......Where I'm not so sure is how "locking" and provider-specific phones work.

I would have thought that an iPhone is an iPhone is an iPhone, but is that not correct? Do I need to see whether or not the iPhone is unlocked? What does that even mean anymore? It's been 10 years since I've thought about phones being 'locked'. Do I need to get an iPhone specifically manufactured to work with whatever cell provider they have in Mexico? (Movistar, Telcel, etc).

Appreciate any thoughts. Please don't answer if you don't know, or are just going to refer me to Wikipedia pages. Thanks in advance.

  • Customizing my Samsung Galaxy S4?

Having just switched from an LG-from-about-2008, to a brand new Samsung Galaxy S4, I do find a lot of super cool features, but I also find some very basic ones lacking, however, hopefully I have just overlooked them and someone can help me.

    1. to toggle "completely silenced" back to "whatever sound settings you had before" - quickly back and forth. with the old LG phone this was a single-swipe, and in fact, without even unlocking the screen

    2. put a shortcut on the desktop that goes to direct-dial or direct-text.

    3. put a shortcut on the desktop that goes NOT ONLY TO AN APP - like "Settings", but goes to a more granular level of same - i.e., on the old LG phone I could put a shortcut that went all the way to the level of SETTINGS > SOUND > VOLUME, whereas on this phone it seems the best I can do is Settings, which is not at all quick nor convenient.

    4. to force the volume for Notifications to mirror whatever is the volume for Ringtone (simplify changing the volume).

  • Switch my email from Yahoo to Gmail?

I at least 10 years of Yahoo mail. Tons of emails in customized folders, etc...I also have my email address on various places, the simple identifying of all those places (much less notifying/updating) would be VERY tenuous.

However, like many people, over the last few years I have become so extremely disenchanted with Yahoo that I'm ready to make the major effort to change. Yahoo has tried so hard to imitate Gmail but has become too fancy for its britches...the pages take forever to load, the buttons aren't clickable until 10 seconds after you click them, you delete email in position #2 and realize that it wasn't done loading so you just deleted the wrong email - in short, it sucks. They took away text alerts and the simple, link-centric format. They don't have any free features that Gmail does.

Anyone have some suggestions for how to extract mail + attachments (probably a hundred thousand) from Yahoo and get to Gmail? I can do a lot of vb programming, would accessing Yahoo from Outlook and then automating Outlook get me anywhere?? Would Outlook even correctly represent my custom Yahoo folders?

  • As a US citizen, I want to apply for my brother over the age of 21 to get a green card.?

After reading the plethora of typical government information (contradictory fragments here and there, each pointing back to the other or somewhere else in good, 1995 spaghetti programming fashion). I think I understand MOST of it, but have this one remaining question:

(he is currently outside the US).

I just want to make sure that after I file this petition for him, there won't come into play any new, special, moratorium on normal, legal, travel to the US (on visitor's visas) - something he does all the time, at least twice a year, as do many visiting Mexican nationals.

It doesn't seem like it........I didn't hear it mentioned. However there is one place where the question says: "Can my immigrant family member wait inside the US for the petition to be approved?" and the answer of course is 'no' - but instead of what they should have put, which is a clearer: "No, unless they are travelling to/in the US by some other legal means such as a common visitor's visa", they just put "NO".

So I just want to make sure that by filing this petition, it doesn't have some other NEW surprising/unexpected affect on his life that was unintended. Otherwise frankly, the US is not that great and certainly not worth waiting 20 years for while visiting and travel is somehow strangely negatively affected.

  • What is the difference between 2² and (2)² ??

My daughter has asked me and I am a programmer of sorts, but my answer was: Nothing.

I'm not a huge math buff, but isn't parentheticals just the order of calculation, just like it is in scripting languages? Why in the world would 2² come out different than (2)² ?

    Thanks

  • Do staffing companies have to pay you federal holidays?

If I were to work for one of those 'staffing' companies (like IT staffing), where they admit that they give you "no benefits", but I am being paid "$__/hour, W2", my question is ...

Even if they provide "no paid vacation", don't they have to pay me for the, like, 5 federal holidays? Isn't that law for W2 employees?

So wouldn't I still potentially get paid for christmas, thanksgiving, etc?

  • Woods - type vacations, within driving distance of Phoenix?

I'm trying to get an idea (maps have not been real helpful to me) of where I can take a vacation, within driving distance (10 hours or less) of Phoenix, that is basically going to get me to a pretty, forest, (regular DECIDUOUS FOREST - NOT DESERT/CANYON/PINE TREES). Examples - a really nice place in colorado or something.

Also, it has to be a place significantly cooler than Phoenix in the summer. (without trading off for it 100% in humidity. Example, Alabama is cooler, but 100 x more humid so doesn't qualify).

Nice places in central california? some place in idaho? someone help me please. i can't take another 4 months in 110 degrees.......Not an animal in the entire state except bugs and birds....and gravel everywhere HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP

  • Folder options in Windows 7 - hide/view, show full paths, etc.?

do I HAVE to go to control panel settings to adjust folder options like hide/view system files, show extensions, single click, etc. etc. ?

I can't do it quickly from any folder?

UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH - add this to the very, very long list of things I HATE about windows 7 and why XP was the best OS of all time.

It is ridiculous that I am a database developer and yet finding out simple questions' answers about basic Windows are now so difficult one has to have window 7 on one screen, google or a wiki site on the other just to navigate it. RIDICULOUS.

  • Value of this King James Rembrandt edition bible, Abradale Press?

How much do you think it's worth:

    King james bible

    published around 1940

    special Rembrandt edition

over 1400 pages, all kinds of colors, paintings, etc. Abradale Press.

I've seen them sold for anywhere from $50 to $1000, or at least the closest replicas that I could find on Amazon.

  • For FHA qualification, job verification question?

at what point in time (how long) PRIOR to closing, will the lender likely STOP verifying my info? For example, 1 day before closing.......30 day before closing.....Whenever you lock (60 or 90) etc.??

    There must some point right?

Or, hypothetically, if you lost your job even one day before closing, would they check it the prior day and cancel the loan, or....?

Just trying to get a sense of what is normal , timeframe wise. There must be SOME time prior to closing when they call it good. What is that?

  • How to dress for a funeral?

I believe the context matters a great deal:

    1) this is not manhattan. (arizona).

    2) this is not close family or even a close friend. It is the death of a co-worker's wife, a co-worker who I work with occasionally.

    3) his boss is my boss too, and they will be there, in addition to a smattering of other people from my work.

Suit required? I feel I've seen people show up to funerals very commonly in black pants and blue or white shirt. What do you think. Is there a range of acceptable attire in my situation?

(he is a man and I am a man).

  • Advice on visiting Imperial Sand Dunes (algodon)?

I live in an east valley phoenix suburb. I have some visitors coming, 2 adults 1 child, from the far northeast. I am seeking advice on how to plan SOME time of experience (seeing, driving, riding, touching, walking) these dunes, with the following criteria:

    1. i'm willing to pay a little to rent something to ride around on them. how/where do I do this?

    2. i have no special skill, licenses, memberships in the park, etc., but I am an able bodied man able to drive a 3 or 4 wheeler, etc.

    3. a total of 4 adults and 3 kids would be involved, but i'm open to ideas that involves just the adults or just the kids.

I've driven past those many times while driving to san diego and know they're just a couple hours away from phoenix. They look so awesome. So what kind of fun can be had on a thursday or friday of next week by a few visitors? anything that's actually worth a 2 hr drive from phoenix? ideas, thanks.

  • Why dvds play in super stretched-out thin aspect ratio ?

I'm so tired of technology how it is made and what is required to 'keep up' with it.

When I switched from my old boob-tube TV to a reasonably nice, 42" widescreen LCD tv, I thought I would get the much-desired widescreen aspect ratio that everyone seems to rave about these days.

Well, I did--in a way.......I got a super-wide, and also not-very-high one. So when I watch movies, yes the width of the image is all the way to the edge of my screen, but only about 60 PERCENT of the height of my TV is utilized. Now that is really sad.

I DO NOT think this is better than the old "non-widescreen, but used all the screen height", in fact, i think it is worse.

It's hard to follow a movie when your tv screen is 25 inches tall, but only 13 of those are actually used in the height of the image. That is just STUPID.

It seems like dvds are made in order to play best on the "highest common denominator" of technology - in other words, the guy that's got the biggest widescreen tv in the world, for him, the movie probably adjusts aspect ratio correctly.

Isn't that HORRIBLE programming practice? When I develop database applications, and I'm thinking about my user audience and the various versions of their technology/environment, I develop to the LEAST common denominator, not the highest...........

WTF ?? (and yes, i've tried switching the aspect ratio on my tv, there are only 2 options - the old way just makes a tiny picture with a bunhc of blank space in all directions.........the "new way" makes a super short, super wide picture...............................

And finally, not sure it's even worth asking this since obviously no one can change it by answering me, but why the heck can tv do a fine job of filling up my screen on all my HD channels, but dvd's can't figure out how to make a movie that auto adusts correctly, or at least is programmed for the lowest common denominator in flatscreen tv'.s..
