Woods - type vacations, within driving distance of Phoenix?
I'm trying to get an idea (maps have not been real helpful to me) of where I can take a vacation, within driving distance (10 hours or less) of Phoenix, that is basically going to get me to a pretty, forest, (regular DECIDUOUS FOREST - NOT DESERT/CANYON/PINE TREES). Examples - a really nice place in colorado or something.
Also, it has to be a place significantly cooler than Phoenix in the summer. (without trading off for it 100% in humidity. Example, Alabama is cooler, but 100 x more humid so doesn't qualify).
Nice places in central california? some place in idaho? someone help me please. i can't take another 4 months in 110 degrees.......Not an animal in the entire state except bugs and birds....and gravel everywhere HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP
PS, and I mean a really pretty wood-sy place. I was thinking Yosemite, but it's 11 hours and that's kind of pushing the concept of 'within driving distance'. Is there a place with water.....streams.......rivers.....deer......rabbits.....maybe bear..etc ???

head to the Mogollon Rim between Sedona and Flagstaff
it is heavily forested there, and the higher elevation makes it cooler than Pheonix
it is about as forested as you will get anywhere near Arizona, the only other plaec I can think of is the higher elevations at the Grand Canyon, and it is packed this time of year
the very closest place outside that will be in the high Sierra in and around King's Canyon/Sequoia NP

90 minutes north on I-17 will put you in a Ponderosa Pine forest which occur between 6009 and 8000 '
There area around Flagstaff where the Ponderosa transitions to deciduous Aspens

And then there is the North Rim of Grand Canyon NP which has more Aspens than the S. Rim does
There are also areas of the White Mountains of AZ in towns like Strawberry and Pine Top AZ that Phoenicians traditionally use to beat the heat
