What do you recommend doing when the boat docks in Nassau?

I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money, nor do I want to go anywhere potentially dangerous -- I heard there's a fair amount of crime in Nassau -- but I'd like to have a fun day with my 20 year old daughter.

-- I read that the $29 Atlantis beach pass is a rip-off since it doesn't allow access to the pools. Do you think it's worth buying?

-- Is there any other beach club?

-- Is it safe to go to a public beach? Which would you recommend?

-- Are any of the tours they sell on the ship worth purchasing?

-- Anything else that would be fun, besides shopping?

I really appreciate your recommendations and suggestions!

You're right about the Atlantis beach pass. It's a rip-off and I recommend not even wasting any of your time even going there. It's nice and all to see the place but you don't have a lot of time so just go spend some time on one of their beautiful beaches.

I took my 18 year old son on a cruise there in the summer of 2011. It was just me and him and we had a great day there. I had been before so I already knew the best places to go and what to to. I got us a cab when we got off the ship and had the cab driver give us a tour of Nassau. I think I paid about $50 for the 2 of us. There are tons of cabbies waiting to do these tours so don't pay a high price. They all do the same thing and you can get a good price if you haggle. The cab tour is fun, lasts about 90 minutes, and you'll get to see all the highlights of Nassau.

Don't mess with the ship offered tours. You'll pay a lot more and you can do as good or better on your own.

We did the cab tour early in the day and returned to the ship to change into some swimwear and grab a bite to eat. Then we went back out to where the cabs are and took a cab to Cabbage Beach. It's about a 5 minute ride and just out the beach from Atlantis. Cabbage Beach is BEAUTIFUL and you'll love it. Best of all it is free! Just take a little cash and you can rent a couple of nice chairs for about $5 each. Remember, take the towels from your room and return them back to the ship when you're done.

No club on the beach but there are people selling mixed drinks there if you're so inclined. One lady was selling small bottles of rum (pints maybe?) and a coconut to drink it from. A LOT of people were doing that and having a great time lol. Do a google search for Cabbage Beach and look at pictures and you'll see how fantastic it is.

The cab driver will take you to Cabbage Beach and drop you off at the end of a path that takes you to the beach from the street. It's about 100 yards and well worth the cab fare and short walk. It's very safe too. When you're done on the beach simply walk back out the path to the street and there will be lots of cabs waiting to take folks back to the ships. When I was there with my son last year there was even a lady hailing cabs to where we were standing and helping tourists brush off the sand on their belongings. Very nice people!

There are beaches within walking distance of the ship too but I haven't been to those. After I discovered Cabbage Beach a few years ago I didn't want to go to any other while in Nassau.

There is plenty of shopping near the ship and as long as you don't wander too far away from the ship/tourist area you'll be fine. Since our departure time wasn't until late in the evening we had time to do a little shopping after we got back from the beach. But a lot of the shops close up about 5pm so keep that in mind.

There is a great bar right there at the dock called Senior Frogs. Loads of people from the cruise ships will be in there partying and having a blast. I recommend checking it out too. Sometimes it's fun to do the tourist thing! You can consider that place your club maybe? At 20, I know your daughter will like it a LOT.

Have fun and I hope this helps!

I've been to Nassau several times and never has an issue with crime, but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I would recommend taking a taxi to the beach and skip paying the $29.00. I also wouldn't book anything through the cruise lines. It's a rip off. We usually take a taxi to the beach and go on the banana boats, or just hang out on the beach. I usually go to the beach close to Atlantis. There's more tourist there. It's a far walk so you'll definatly want to take a taxi. It's around $5.00 a person plus tip. Well worth it when you see how far it is.

You can visit Atlantis and walk around for free. You can also purchase a water park pass by just going to Atlantis and buying it there. It's about 1/2 the price that the cruise ships charge. There's also plenty of straw huts to go shopping, and things like parasailing. They do island tours. When you get off the cruise ship they'll be tons of natives offering you things to do. Most of these companies are legit. They make their living from tourist, so they aim to please. Just make sure you both agree on the price before you do anything. A lot of times you can negotiate prices.

A lot of the resorts will let you buy a day pass to hang out by the pool if that's something you'd like to do. I would advise you not to wear any jewlery. Keep all of that locked up in the safe in your room. Also, I wouldn't carry large amounts of cash. Stick to small bills if you go shopping. Don't wear flashy expensive clothes, and stay where the tourist go. You should have no problems.

do you *have* to pay? No, you have a debt, but it's always your choice whether to pay your debts or not. The worst that can happen is, they can throw you in debtors prison until your family comes up with the money. Just kiddin, no debtors prisons in the USA. What can they do? If the reason you have no social security number is that you're an "undocumented worker", then the worst they can do is deport you to your country of origin. Now that your boat has been destroyed, you have no assets (except maybe the laptop you're reading this on) - you're basically what a lawyer (which I am not) would call "judgement proof", meaning that no matter how hard they come after you they can't get anything. No SSN means no bank account, no job, I'm wondering how the heck you could afford a boat. ~~~~~~~~ Edit: on further consideration...they might decide to turn it over to Homeland Security (have you ever visted Afghanistan?). You might qualify for an indefinate all-expenses-paid vacation in sunny Guantanimo Bay, Cuba!

Atlantis is about $150 for the day for one person. It used to be half that for military but they no longer offer that and since the park closes at 6 pm and you sometimes don't get there till after the park opens it's not worth it in my opinion. I go to the public beach. I believe it's called Cabage Beach. Also if you want to get rum cake don't get them in the visitor center or rum cake factory. Directly across from the Tortuga Factory is the "Food Store" (Yes, that is what it's called) and you can get rum cake for half the price and it's just as good. Don't bother touring Nassau because you'll get the tour at full speed on your way to and from the public beach. Bring at least 20 in ones. They always say they have no change and they force a tip out of you.

  • If there is ONE thing I would recommend spending $ on its definitely snorkeling! If you've never been, you're in for a real treat! They take you out about 45 mins, then you have an hour in the water, and the 45 min ride back. You would still have time for shopping, drinking, etc. The water is crystal clear and the fish are beautiful and amazing! They get out there and feed the fish to guarantee you'll see lots!!

We stayed at Atlantis a cpl yrs ago for 4 nights, and it still wasn't enough time to see it all. I think if you go over there you'll waste your whole day just sight-seeing Atlantis. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful! There is just SO MUCH to see there, it could be overwhelming and time-wasting.

We took one of the passenger ferries over to Atlantis. It was cheap and fun little boat ride. You can walk around the lobby and casino area of Atlantis for free but you can't go to the pool or beach with out paying. The ferry boats over to Atlantis will be lined up waiting for you as you get off your cruise ship so you can't miss them.
